Building spaces with local communities rio de janeiro, brazil

PROJECT OVERVIEW: This workshop is a product of the integrated work of the research groups from the Graduate Program in Architecture of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PROARQ-FAU/UFRJ): GAE - Educational Environments group, SEL-RJ - Open Spaces Systems of Rio de Janeiro group and ProLugar - Places and Landscapes group. The main goal of this workshop is to engage neighbors in a participatory process to promote inclusivity for an urban intervention in Rio de Janeiro's Manguinhos neighborhood, a region with a very fragile and complex socio-economic environment. We will combine different approaches involving many agents in this project: local residents, community representatives, civil society, students, researchers, and public managers. The activities proposed aim to spur a reflection on the role of architecture and urbanism with students and professionals in order to construct a more equal and inclusive city, which gives voice and visibility to social groups that are normally not considered in urban landscape design and planning.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Since the first meetings, local leadership has acted as the main link between the different urban agents and the community, and also has been engaged in mobilizing the residents to attend and contribute in the workshop. During the workshop, our emphasis will be on the local residents' knowledge, especially related to children, who normally do not participate in the decisions about urban landscape and planning. First, we will conduct activities with local children involving architecture and territory analysis, as well as project guidelines. After that, different urban agents will bring additional viewpoints, forming a collective proposition. The second part of the workshop will be directed at the main issues pointed out in the previous activities. At this point, we will integrate analysis from researchers, students and professionals, following socio-environmental, historical and morphological approaches.
