Barbie Dolls Are Causing Young Girls to be Unhappy with Their Bodies
Since Barbie dolls were made they have all had the same image. Barbie dolls are described as petit and thin with perfect curves. This is an image that most people today do not have let along the young girls who are playing with these dolls. The image of Barbie dolls are making young girls believe that they have to be thin in order to fit in and be popular. Studies have shown that Barbie dolls can be the cause for girls being unhappy with their body and wishing they were thinner.
Barbie Dolls Portions Are Unrealistic
If Barbie dolls were made into a life sized real human being their body portions would make them unable to survive. The Barbie dolls neck is twice as long and 6 inches thinner then the average women, making it impossible for a Barbie doll to lift its heads. The waist of a Barbie doll is 16 inches, which only leaves room for half a liver and a few intestines. A Barbie dolls feet are made to be a child’s size 3, causing a Barbie doll to have to walk on all fours. A Barbie dolls wrists are 3.5 inches and would be completely incapable of doing anything. A Barbie dolls legs are 50% longer then her arms.
Barbie Dolls Are Gender Discriminating
Barbie dolls are gender discriminating. Female Barbie dolls are given jobs such as hairdressers, cashiers and nurses. These careers have been labeled as female jobs and young girls believe they cannot have a job that a male would have. Studies have shown that young girls who have grown up playing with Barbie dolls believe they have fewer job options compared to the young girls who did not grow up playing with Barbie dolls who believe there job opportunities are much more.
Negative Role Models For Young Girls
At a young age girls begin looking for role models that they can look up to. Barbie dolls can be negative role models for young girls. Some Barbie dolls are given clothes that would be seen as inappropriate for young girls. When young girls are surrounded by these types of clothing in their toys they will begin to want to dress this way.
Eliminate the Image of Barbie
Other doll companies have began making different sized dolls along with more age appropriate dolls for young girls to grow up playing with. Although these are better dolls for girls to play with, the image of Barbie dolls still exists and needs to be eliminated completely.
