Haslingden High School PTFA Newsletter January 2019

Hello parents, carers, teachers & friends! We hope that you are all well and had a brilliant Christmas!

This is our first attempt at a newsletter, so we thought we'd start with telling you a little bit about the PTFA and what we do:

What we do:

Haslingden High School PTFA (Parents, Teachers & Friends Association) is a registered charity dedicated to IMPROVING COMMUNICATION between home and school and also RAISING FUNDS for the school.

Improving communication

The PTFA have regular meetings where parents can communicate directly with school staff representatives in an informal environment. This can provide feedback on matters relating to our children’s education, such as school administration, where a meeting with a specific teacher may not be justified. Equally, the staff may use these meetings to obtain feedback from parents on general matters, like changing the format of our children's school reports and then use this valuable feedback to implement the changes our parents wish to see. There will always be a member of the school's Senior Leadership Team (and other staff) present at these meetings.

Improving Communication

We always love to see new faces and hear new perspectives at our meetings and we feel that it's really important for parents across the school to be represented when decisions are made.

We normally meet once a term on a Monday evening at 6pm for about an hour however we do realise that this is not convenient for some, so there is often discussion on our Facebook page/inbox too. Suggestions and comments made using these forums are always passed on and taken into consideration during the meetings.

Improving communication

Our next meeting is currently scheduled for Monday 4th February 6pm however, we will confirm this shortly. You will always be notified of the meeting dates on our Facebook page and by school text.

Fundraising!

How do we raise funds?

We raise funds by holding fun events for the children and their families/carers. Last term we had a "Bingo & Fizz" night which we thought was a real success and had great feedback from you. Kate made some amazing chocolate bouquets as prizes! We have a Family Quiz Night coming up at the end of March.

Fundraising

We also provide refreshments at some school run events. We trialled tea and coffee sales for the first time and this went down a treat!

Fundraising

We run an annual Christmas Raffle. Congratulations to our many prize winners!

Fundraising

We also run a 300 Club. Congratulations to Lucy, who recently won £780.75 in the Grand Christmas Draw! New members are always welcome and you can join from £2 per month.

Fundraising

We are registered on two online shopping fundraising schemes - Easyfundraising and AmazonSmile, who both provide "cashback" to your chosen registered charity - we hope you choose us!

Fundraising

Fundraising update: Last term, the Fizz & Bingo night raised £279.48; our refreshment stalls raised £626.83; a chocolate tombola raised £35.31; and our Christmas Raffle raised £248 -that's a total of £1189.62 in one term!

Wow, thank you!

Wow!

Spending The Money

Anyone at the school can request funding from the PTFA and requests are considered either at our termly meetings or within our "bids and requests" closed Facebook group.

Any school faculties wondering about obtaining funds from us, do get in touch!

To meet the criteria for funding, requests need to comply with a few conditions.....

  • Does it provide educational or fun value for the children?
  • Will all the children at school benefit (should they wish)?
  • Can we afford it?

If the answer to any of those questions is "no", it doesn't necessarily mean we won't fund it; it just means a little more investigation is required or some targeted fundraising may be needed.

Spending

Recently, we have funded: an e-library, sports kits, board games, drones, Duke Of Edinburgh equipment, remembrance garden materials, a guitar and a bee-friendly garden!

Join us!

As a parent, carer, or staff member, you are automatically considered to be a valuable member of the PTFA family here at Haslingden High School - your level of involvement is entirely up to you and will NEVER require constant commitment; we promise!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Ideas - the ethos behind all of our events is FUN; getting our school community together is our goal and any money raised from this is a bonus! If you have any ideas - we would love to hear from you, at our meetings, on our Facebook page, via our email.

Organisation and planning - each event requires work behind the scenes. If you can't help on the day, you may be able give us a hand in the lead up..

How you can help

Volunteer at events - there are always lots of small jobs during events and we always need plenty of pairs of hands.

If you’d like to join our contact list for helpers, do let us know!

Attending the events - we work hard putting together each event but they are no fun if people don't come along and join in. You'll be notified of each event on our Facebook page and by school text. Please support us if you can.

Join our 300 Club - you can join from £2 per month. Details are on the school website or contact us and we will be delighted to give you all the information.

Register us to be your chosen good cause and use EasyFundraising and AmazonSmile when you shop online at no cost to you! If you need any help with this process, please do contact us.

Donations - this is a really important part of our fundraising; here are a couple of ways you can help:

Donations appeal!
  • Match Funding. An increasing number of large companies operate a match funding scheme where they "match" charity fundraising undertaken by their employees. Please check it out with your employer and let us know if you can help.
  • Raffle Prizes. We hold several raffles throughout the year and we are always on the lookout for prizes (bottles of wine, chocolates, smellies, vouchers). This is a great time to donate your unwanted Christmas gifts to a worthy cause! Or do you know any local businesses that may consider donating a prize? Please drop any donations at main school reception marked for the attention of the PTFA or contact us to arrange evening/weekend drop off/collection.
