Today marks a close to the award ceremonies that have dominated our television screens and flooded our Instagram and Twitter feeds with the extravagant and sometimes ridiculous outfits that have been showcased by Celebs as they walk the red carpet. 2020 seems to have seen a shift in what we can expect to see on the red carpet, as celebrities and designers turn their backs on the traditional ballgown that we have come to associate with such events.
Billie Eilish, perhaps the most influential figure of our generation right now, chose to sport an oversized ivory Chanel pant-suit, embellished with an array of glimmering Chanel brooches dripping in pearls. But Billie did not stop there, she added a pair of lace fingerless gloves, which read "CHA" and "NEL" across her hands. these made for a bold statement as she posed for the camera with her hands by her face as a reminder of who she was wearing, just incase you had missed it! This look allowed Billie to maintain the androgynous style that we know and love her for, whilst still being glamorous and appropriate for the event and so I think her choice to ditch the ballgown was a big success!
Janelle Monáe was another star who turned heads in her stunning outfit and she has been praised for being one of the best dressed people to walk the red carpet. Monáe wore a shimmering custom Ralph Lauren gown, embellished with an astonishing 168,000 Swarovski crystals, which must have been heavy to wear but looked absolutely amazing! From the neck down, her dress was a traditional style often seen on the red carpet, with long sleeves and an A-line floor-length hem. However, Monáe made a huge statement by wearing the attached draped hood to dramatic effect. Monáe has cleverly reinvented the 'hood' as we know it and made it into an extravagant fashion statement, as opposed to simply being a functional feature of clothing. Again i think it is safe to say that this was a fashion success!
Billy Porter captured everyone's attention at the 2019 Oscars with his half tuxedo-half ball gown look and so all eyes continue to be on him as we anticipate what he will do next and lets just say his 2020 Grammys look did not disappoint! Porter and his stylist Ratelle worked alongside Scott Studenberg to create this fully embellished hat, complete with its own motorised crystal curtain that he could open and close to reveal his face. Talk about making an entrance! But the crystals did not stop at the hat, in-fact he was dripping head to toe in a stunning combination of turquoise and clear crystals that covered his one piece jumpsuit and matching cropped jacket. He completed the look with silver embellished platform boots, a matching clutch and statement cuff with a crystal spider; an interesting choice if you ask me! This is such an inventive and unique look and so it is definitely up there with one of my favourite looks of 2020 so far.
Bebe stunned at the Grammys in a formal two-piece pant-suit and sheer long-sleeve turtle-neck top, which was diamond encrusted with both black and clear crystals. Her wide leg trousers and subtle shoulder pads created drama; giving Bebe a powerful look and additionally supporting the power dressing movement for women. Much like the previous looks this is definitely one that celebrates the trend to 'ditch the ballgown' in favour of more individualistic styling.
