A Designers Perspective Portfolio by Mackenzie O'Mahony

Hello, my name is Mackenzie O’Mahony. I was born and raised in Newmarket ON, Which is approximately an hour train ride north of Toronto. Currently I am going to school at George Brown College located in downtown Toronto. I have many different interest that are both related and non related to my future career. I have a passion for hockey, and have played at a competitive level throughout my life since the age of 7. Snowboarding has also been a hobby of mine although took a backseat to hockey many winter seasons. Other than personal occupations, I have an excitement towards design. I mainly focus on industrial designing because it is more product based and has a very broad field.

Letter of Intent/Statement of Purpose Guidelines

In the future after I finish all my schooling I would eventually like to get a job in the field of Industrial Design. So far I am currently taking a program in George Brown called ‘Art & Design Foundation”. After this course I would like to continue my education by taking the Industrial Design program at Humber College, located in Toronto. Eventually in the distant future I would like to be a designer for high end car companies. I have many different strengths and skills that I feel have led me to my aspiration of being an Industrial Designer. Some of these skills consist of; having a good vision for design and the way things look, good at drawing, also very passionate about working with stuff that interests me. For now I am still learning specific skills that will allow me to move on to Humber college with experience and be able to continue my career from there. George Brown College has helped me explore and formulate my future career because of certain programs that have important skills that are vital in Industrial Design. For example the multi media class is very important because it allows me to learn about different programs that help me design and create objects from nothing but my ideas. Another class that helps is drawing, because it forces me to become a better artist and have better quality drawings which is important in the first steps of designing anything. What makes me good at what I do is the passion that I have for certain objects. For example I have always loved cars growing up and personally I think that it would be amazing to have the job of designing them. I feel that because I would love my job that it would entice great work ethic and passion due to interest of what I would be designing. I also believe that it is a really big asset towards future employers, the fact that the employee loves his/her job, causes them to strive at it.

philosophical statement

I believe that design has always been something that I have been passionate about. Ever since grade school my friends and I would always love to build and design different things, longboards for example. There was a long process to build these boards and it would always start with a design. Eventually when we grew older we started working on bigger / more challenging products. A few summers ago we created a “Drift Trike”. The objective being to turn a regular BMX bike into a tricycle with plastic covered back end wheels. Long story short, design has always been a part of my life growing up. Because I have such an interest in designing and building products I have decided that I would like to make a career out of it.

Inspirational quotations

“The goal of a designer is to listen, observe, understand, sympathize, empathize, synthesize, and glean insights that enable him or her to ‘make the invisible visible.’ –Hillman Curtis

"Big thinking precedes great achievement." — Wilferd Peterson

"The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious." — John Scully

These quotes were very inspirational to me because I believe that if you really want to achieve something, then it is possible. Especially in industrial design, where the whole career is finding new ways to create products and new inventions.
