Spiritual Disciplines Word, Prayer, Fasting and Worship

All these years we have been training students to become godly leaders. Leaders who don't just possess integrity and excellence but leaders who fear God. That's the very reason why we help and train students in growing their faith to God and establish a strong relationship with Him. And like any other relationship, it needs to be cultivated with time and effort. Spiritual Disciplines are attitudes and practices that strengthen our relationship with Him.

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. - HEBREWS 12:11

Would you agree that Spiritual Discipline is important? Reading the Word of God, worship, prayer and fasting are often taken for granted by many Christians nowadays. Sometimes, it feels dragging to spend time with God especially if constrained by time, studies, work and responsibilities. Because of the fact that a relationship with God may no longer be the priority, this makes spiritual discipline challenging to achieve.

Last January, we encouraged the students to join our annual Prayer and Fasting. In this year's prayer and fasting, we focused more on the very reason why we fast - to know more about God. It was a 5-day event of digging into the Word, Prayer and Fasting and Worship.

We all know that the Bible is where we find the Word of God. Hence, reading the Bible is actually letting God to communicate with us. There's no other way to know Him aside from reading His Word. Because our goal is to get closer to Him, we need to all the more read His Word. That is also what we want for students - to have a deeper relationship with God.

(Above) Students shared about what they learned from the Bible. (Below) Students from MSU-CETD doing the S.O.A.P. together.

At times, students don't know how to read the Word. They don't even know where to start. So, we help by teaching them how to do their devotional. We encouraged them to start with the Book of Mark, because it's easy to read, and do the S.O.A.P. method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer). Through these, reading God's Word will be easier and intentional. And the end of the day, they will know and learn about who really God is.

If God's Word is His way to communicate with us, prayer on the other hand is our way to communicate with Him. We can't deny the power of prayer. But if we want our prayers to be more powerful, we need to pray and fast.

Prayer and Fasting is most challenging among spiritual disciplines. It is neglecting the worldly desires and passion (including food) and soaking ourselves in God's presence. Prayer and Fasting is about God, not us. It is more than just asking God for breakthroughs and it's actually a perfect avenue to establish a stronger relationship with Him.

During this 5-Day Prayer and Fasting, we have seen how the students passionately prayed. And it's such a joy to see them praying together and praying for each other. Through prayer and fasting, students had personal revelation from God, and that's something no one can take away from them. Their faith to God was strengthened as well!

Worship is an expression of our adoration to God. It is an attitude of honoring Him because of His attributes. Sadly, it is the most neglected spiritual discipline. As Christians, worship should be part of our life. It's a discipline we all need to learn. We don't have to be a good singer or musician to express our adoration to God. We are to constantly honor Him because He is all worthy. PERIOD.

Such principle, we teach our students about what really is worship. It's not about the skills or talents to worship, but it's utmost about the heart. A heart to worship God in spirit and in truth. Jesus said in John 4:23-24 "But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Why we do include worship in the spiritual discipline? Because worship is what God wants from us. This is what God is seeking.

To learn more about Spiritual Disciplines, here's Bishop Manny Carlos of Victory Philippines sharing valuable insight on the importance of spiritual disciplines.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. - 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV

We are all excited to know God more this year. We're looking forward to get fresh revelations from Him each and everyday. I too am also excited for the students to grow and become the godly leaders whom God wants them to be - leaders who exercise and practice spiritual disciplines.

Again and again, thank you so much for your unwavering prayer and support in the ministry. We pray that more than just being inspired on what we are doing in the campus, YOU yourself are encouraged to do the spiritual disciplines. Our desire is for YOU to grow more in your relationship with God. Nothing beats the art of reading God's Word, Prayer and Fasting and Worship.
