Summer SMAC

Summer SMAC is a Summer League Swim Team designed for athletes ages 6-17 of all abilities. The team provides an opportunity for new swimmers to experience swim practice, low pressure meets and all the team spirit and fun that comes with being on a team! Summer SMAC is all about summer fun while giving team members the chance to learn and develop as swimmers and teammates. Each athlete will learn to be comfortable in the water, be introduced to all 4 strokes, and learn skills in the pool that they can carry with them for a lifetime. All ages and abilities will work on stroke mechanics, strength and endurance. With a positive, supportive environment, Summer SMAC is the BEST introduction to the sport of swimming in Waynesville. Learning and summer fun are the priority!

With over combined 40 years experience in the sport, SMAC Coaches pride themselves on creating and engaging and educational on deck environment where SMACers will learn the ropes of the sport in a fun and safe environment. This past season we had many athletes finish top 10 in the state in multiple events. Fun and learning are the top priorities of a Summer SMAC practice!

The season starts May 15th
Athletes on Summer SMAC will:
  • Learn and develop the 4 competitive strokes.
  • Learn and develop racing dives.
  • Become more comfortable in the water with games!
  • Review and learn basic swim safety rules.
  • Participate in fun meets that emphasize teamwide and personal improvement
  • HAVE FUN!!!
  • Become stronger and more confident swimmers!

Frequently asked Questions

When does the season start?

The season will begin May 15th and end August 8th. Our first swim meet is scheduled for the middle of June and our last meet is scheduled for early August. All meets will be Saturday mornings. Athletes and families will get to choose from the following practice schedule availabilities:

  • Mon/Thurs/Fri 6-7:30pm
  • When School Gets out: 8-9:30am
When can we join?

Online Registration is OPEN! We have 50 spaces available, and they're going quickly. Athletes may join at any point during the season as long as there is space available.

We’re very interested! How much is Summer SMAC?

Pricing: $75 registration fee and the cost of membership ($65 per month). Families can pay monthly or for the entire summer upfront at a 10% discount for $249. (Non-Refundable).

Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club is a seperate entity from the Waynesville Rec Center. As such, athletes will need to be members of the Waynesville Rec Center in order to be members of Summer SMAC.

Time for some Backstroke
My athlete has guitar lessons on Wednesday nights and will not be able to attend. Can they still participate on the team?

Absolutely! We understand that athletes have other obligations outside of the pool and encourage our members to excel in everything! At the beginning of the season, we’ll release our curriculum so you know what you’ll be missing should you need to miss a few days. Shred on bro!

If you're going on vacataion for part of the summer, no worries! All athletes can participate. Make sure to let a coach know of your planned vacation.

WHAT WILL WE NEED TO BRING TO PRACTICE?

All athletes will need three things at every practice. A SUIT is priority one. Boys should wear a jammer. Girls should wear a one piece suit, without dangly, frilly, or shiny things. GOGGLES. Athletes will need goggles that cover the eyes only. Please no diving masks that cover the nose. A SWIM CAP. Caps are provided and come with the cost of membership.

Who are the coaches?
Coach Charlie McCanless

Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club's Head Coach, Charlie McCanless, began his swimming career at the age of 6 and swam his way through college, finishing at East Carolina University as a Varsity Record Holder and Team Captain. While in Greenville, NC he worked for Greenville Country Club as Head coach and after graduation he worked for SwimMac Carolina. Following a move to Boston, Charlie worked for Charles River Aquatics as Senior Group Coach and a primary Age Group Coach. He's worked with all ages and abilities from Junior National Level Qualifiers to children brand new to the sport. Charlie is still a competitor himself and a proud US Masters Swimmer.

Coach Scott Simmons

Lead Summer SMAC Coach Scott Simmons, .Coach Scott grew up in a Holland, Michigan and swam competitively from 1986-2011. With a mother who has been a Head Coach for 30 years, Scott and his family have a very strong background in USA swimming. Most recently, Scott was working as the Head Coach for the Stingrays at the Central MA YMCA. In addition to being an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, he's an American Swim Coach Association Level 3 coach, USA Swimming and YMCA certified coach. Coach Scott grew up in and around the water, and is excited to be moving down to Waynesville to help Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club conquer the sport one stroke at a time. He's a firm believer in teaching technique, reinforcing good habits and the importance of a positive attitude. Heencourages all athletes to swim smart and use their senses. Coach Cora Dodson

Coach Cora, a SMAC lifetime member, NCAA Athlete and NC State Champs qualifier, has accumulated vast experience as a volunteer coach on SMAC. She’s worked with athletes of all ages and abilities and is hoping to give her love of the sport of swimming to every Summer SMAC athlete.
