November is here and that means Thanksgiving is coming.. BUT, what many don’t know is that Thanksgiving day is also National Family Health History Day! Many of us will be spending Thanksgiving day with our family (following appropriate COVID safety guidelines, of course), which means it is the PERFECT opportunity to ask about your family history.
It might seem like a strange topic to bring up on such a happy day, but what you find out may both surprise you, and help you for the future. Knowing your family history is such an important task because it gives you all the information you need to ensure you are doing what you can to live a health life.
Once you get this information, write it down in your own notes or a family history record keeper. You can also do your own research on certain conditions so that you are aware of any risk factors.
This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to bring up this topic if it has not been already discussed. Ask your parents, children, grandparents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles - or ANY blood relative. People may not want to speak about it at first, but explain to them that this is for everyone’s benefit.
Finding this information out can allow you to take any precautions you need, and pass this along to your children and generations to come.
