Rest In Peace 02/20/2017

I attended a funeral this morning at the small, rural church where I grew up. The morning was rather bleak, and as I looked out over the cemetery just west of the church, I thought how peaceful it looked. As I was driving to work, I decided to come back to the cemetery that evening and take a few pictures.

I like the peaceful feel of this view. I like how the shadows cross the central path of the cemetery. I didn’t really notice the electric poles when I was composing the shot, but I really love the symbolism they add.
I’ve known this cemetery all of my life and I’ve always been intrigued by these three headstones. They have writing in German on their faces and they mark where some of the original Prussian immigrants of the church community are buried.
I think these are some of the most beautiful headstones in the cemetery. They have an unusual style for this humble cemetery.
In my mind, the shot I composed was a panorama of the sun setting behind the cemetery with the headstones as silhouettes. Well, the sky was perfectly clear in the west this evening and I did get some nice shots, but then I turned and looked to the east and saw the setting sun reflecting off the clouds from the storm earlier today. The color version is beautiful, but I thought the black and white captured my mood better. For today, at least.
