2017 was a year of new links and partnerships, prizes, new goals to be achieved with a more streamlined approach.

We do continue the tradition of the past 40+ years to provide our students with the best education in international business and economics, to help them reach their global ambitions and to enrich the knowledge in our field through top research.

We had a wonderful 2017. This is the brief story of our year...

This year, we saw a change in leadership at the Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication. Professor Emerita Mariana Nicolae has turned over the reins of the Department to Teodora Serban-Oprescu, Assoc.Prof. A very grateful thought to Professor Nicolae who has been a core driver of our Faculty throughtout the years, as Chancellor, Vice-Dean and Head of Department.

We were also extremely proud of Professor Carmen Stoean, recipient of the "Prix Opera Omnia ARDUF", awarded by the Romanian Association of Francophone University Departments - ARDUF. The prize is awarded for the contribution of school founders from various university centers to the development of francophone studies.

We are the hosts of the newest Center for American Studies, an important resource for our students. More details about the Center, on its Facebook page.

The Opening of the Center for American Studies - January 19, 2017. The Centre had as guests on its launch His Excellency Hans Klemm, the US Ambassador to Romania, Prof. Nicolae Istudor, the Rector of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Prof. Marius Profiroiu, Vice-Rector in charge with International Relations, Prof. Dorel Paraschiv, Vice-Rector in charge with the Business Environment, teachers and students.

We are also the hosts of Google Digital Hub. Launched in June, Atelierul Digital provides free tutorials for online marketing.

We also provide 1 year of Romanian for Beginners for Foreign students, the first programme of its kind to be accredited in Romania.

About the fuel for our engagement, our students:

Starting this year, we are collaborating with Ursus Breweries, the University of Bedfordshire, Google Romania for their Digital Hub and the Romanian Ministry of Economy for a new master programme. We are also continuing our strong partnerships with PwC Romania, INACO, Saxo Bank and HBS, as well as numerous important companies and organizations.

Five of our students benefit from a year-long scholarship, provided by Ursus Breweries: VLAD FLORIAN ALEXANDRU, TUFAN ALEXANDRU ION, VASILE ANA-MARIA-ANDREEA, SARCOSELI CLAUDIU GABRIEL and PETRE MARINELA.

We have new colleagues: Professor Lucian Croitoru and Lecturer Narciz Balasoiu joined the Department of International Business and Economics. Dr. Alina-Maria Mardari and Dr. Alexandra Costache-Babcinschi joined the Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication.

We have met twice with our Advisory Board (in February and in December) to discuss new courses and new skills we should provide our students to make them better prepared for Economy 4.0

We continued to provide you information about the volatility of Romanian markets on indicevolatilitate.ase.ro

This year, we have made Japanese dolls with HE Kisaburo Ishii, the Ambassador of Japan to Bucharest, learned about how to build a different Silicon Valley with Tal Catran, talked about civil rights with Martin Luther King III and Michael Tierney (Step by Step, Charleston, West Virginia, USA), pondered on the isssue of Romani in Romania with Michelle Kelso (George Washington University), discussed about using documents and archive collections in teaching and research practice, during Intercultural Connections, an interactive debate with Barry Houlihan from NUI (National University of Ireland), Archive Collections and Ioana Zirra, University of Bucharest, chatted about the business environment with Paul Donovan, Global Chief Economist of UBS Wealth Management, the largest Swiss bank, listened to the most interesting stories of Mari Kano Klemm about leadership in a multicultural world, debated with Prof. Thomas Cousineau (Washington College) on the Importance of literature and of an education in humanities for nowadays students, enjoyed the presentation of Dr. Florentin Popescu (Han University of Applied Sciences) and discussed with Dr. Cornelia Rotaru (ADAF) about Romania's position in the Global Competitiveness Report. And this is just a small part of all the presentations made by Romanian and foreign guests to our students throughout the year.

On May 8, we hosted the celebration of 50 years of ASEAN. The event was hosted by HE Diar Nurbintoro - Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Romania, HE Tran Thanh Cong - Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Romania and HE Dato Tajul Aman Mohammad - Ambassador of Malaysia to Romania.

Our research centres carried out their own events and we must mention the Vietnam today conference, organized by the Center for Indochina Studies, which had the honor to receive H.E. Mr. Tran Thanh Cong - Ambassador of the S.R. of Viet Nam. We must also mention the events of the Centre de Réussite universitaire, that held in February the second stage of the Mon premier emploi Competition and the First stage of the Civilisation francophone Competition. Both contests are for students of French as first or second language and are financed by l'Agence universitaire de la Francophonie.

We have participated in the Debates on the Future of the European Union, organized by , with (in chronological order) Kerstin Jorna - Deputy Director General in the Economic and Financial Affairs general directorate, Günther Oettinger - European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, Corina Crețu - European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Marius Nica - Romanian Minister of European Funds and Petre Daea - Romanian Minister of Agriculture.

We have organized conferences, workshops and roundtables

Words about the success of the 8th edition of the Future of Europe International Conference and 6th edition of the Synergies in Communication International Conference, held in November, are still reaching us.

România inventiva. România competitiva. Topul inventiilor românesti cu potential în economia reala”, an event about Innovation and competitiveness, organized by our partner INACO and BUES. INACO also co-hosted with us a conference in March ”From Homo Faber to Homo Sapiens”. We should not forget to mention our participation in the FDSE - The Forum for Sustainable Development and Entrepreneurship.

This was also a year of loss: Professor Gheorghe DOLGU (1929 - 2017), Rector of the BUES between 1971 and 1980 and a fundamental part of the Foreign Trade education and Professor Professor Vasile Bozga (1929 - 2017), a true inspiration for generation of students he introduced to the history of economics. They shall be deeply missed and piously remembered...

Next year , we have a lot of things planned: The Future of Europe - 9th Edition, Synergies in Communication - 7th Edition and.... The Book: A team effort from all the REI community to bring you a volume on International Business and Economics, for students and practitioners. The book is in Romanian (for now) and shall be available hot off the presses in the first part of 2018.
