What do you need to know?

The hemodialysis diet is very important for patient's on dialysis and can help improve your quality of life. The diet is designed to help reduce fluid and waste build-up during times that you are not in dialysis. This can help you feel more energetic, be able to do more activities of daily living and reduce the risk of other complications!

What should I eat?

The best way to have a nutritious hemodialysis diet is by increasing the amount of high-proteins in the diet. That would include poultry, fish, lean meat, and egg whites. You should try to avoid foods high in potassium, phosphorous, and sodium because these foods can increase fluid build up in the body. You should also limit your fluid intake to prevent fluid overload, high blood pressure and shortness of breath. A great resource to find recipes and food options is on the DaVita website.

Other tips and facts.

A great way to determine if the diet is working is by seeing how you feel after dialysis. If the diet is working you will feel less ill and dizzy after treatment and have fewer complications. You should be on the hemodialysis diet as long as you are on hemodialysis. While the hemodialysis diet helps you feel at your best it does not cure your kindey's or reverse the damage that is already done.

Pasta Primavera

Recipe submitted by DaVita dietitian Yvette from Texas.

Portions: 6

Serving size: 1-3/4 cup

Ingredients

◾12 ounces pasta, uncooked

◾12 ounces frozen mixed vegetables

◾14 ounces low-sodium chicken broth

◾2 tablespoons all-purpose white flour

◾1/4 cup half & half creamer

◾1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

◾1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation

1.Cook pasta and vegetables in separate pots according to package directions, but omitting salt. Drain.

2.Pour low-sodium chicken broth in a medium-sized stockpot and heat on low heat.

3.Add flour to broth whisking vigorously to avoid clumps from forming.

4.Add half and half and garlic powder and stir.

5.Simmer on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes until mixture thickens slightly. Stir occasionally while simmering.

6.Add cooked vegetables and pasta. Cook until heated through.

7.Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and serve.

Cherry Coffee cake

Portions: 24

Serving size: 2" x 3" piece

Ingredients

◾1/2 cup unsalted butter

◾2 eggs

◾1 cup granulated sugar

◾1 cup sour cream

◾1 teaspoon vanilla

◾2 cups all-purpose white flour

◾1 teaspoon baking powder

◾1 teaspoon baking soda

◾20 ounces cherry pie filling

Preparation

1.Preheat oven to 350° F. Set butter out at room temperature to soften.

2.Using a mixer, cream butter, eggs, sugar, sour cream and vanilla.

3.In separate bowl combine flour, baking powder and baking soda.

4.Add dry ingredients to creamed butter mixture and mix well. Pour batter into a greased 9" x 13" baking pan.

5.Evenly disperse cherry pie filling over batter.

6.Bake for 40 minutes until golden brown.
