Education Plan

THE PEOPLE FOR TERRELL MCKINEY

Our campaign has put together our legislative plan to address edcuation. This plan is a living document which means were always open to new suggestion and ideas. Our plan is in five parts: Improving public school experience & outcomes, Teachers, administration, & staff, Public school restructuring, Health & Sexual education, & Higher Education.

IMPROVING PUBLIC SCHOOL EXPERIENCE & OUTCOMES

  • Create new legislation and look at best practices nationally to mandate true and historically factual black history in all Nebraska public schools
  • Cultural competency courses for all students
  • College & career prep will start in elementary school for all Nebraskan students
  • Partnerships with: Public/Private colleges and universities
  • All public schools will be required to provide financial literacy education at all levels (Credit, saving, budgeting, loans, business planning, etc.)
  • Expand civics courses in all K-12 education
  • Ensure that resources are equitably allocated to increase access to trades, IT, and other emerging industries
  • Create a safety net program for students that are failing
  • Reintroduce legislation to provide mental/trauma-based counseling in all schools
  • Evaluate standardized testing and look for alternatives
  • Increase K-12 access to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) programs/education (Especially for students that primarily reside in blighted/extremely blighted communities
  • Success plans for athletes to prepare them for life after high school

TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATION, & STAFF

  • Create new legislation and look at best practices nationally to require all public school administrators, staff, district employees to take recurring cultural competency and race equity training
  • Create new legislation and look at best practices that would require all public school senior administrative and athletic staff to reflect its school population
  • Increase teacher & para pay
  • Increase paid planning time for teachers
  • Create an incentive package to build a pipeline of teachers from blighted/extremely blighted communities
  • Cancel student debt for teachers who commit to work for at least 5 years in blighted/extremely blighted communities

PUBLIC SCHOOL RESTRUCTURING

  • End school-based suspensions and look at alternatives to close the school to prison pipeline
  • Allocate resources to community mentorship programs
  • Equitable distribution of public school funding
  • Increase public school funding through new revenue streams
  • Provide a tutor for every child performing below grade level
  • Offer free breakfast and lunch for all students, regardless of income
  • Decrease class sizes
  • Build up parent-teacher organizations in high poverty schools
  • Create new legislation and look at best practices that would implement a statewide education standard and grading system in all public schools
  • Create a long term strategic education plan/vision for the state
  • Expand access to broadband and new technologies
  • Remove school resources officer from schools
  • Require at least two student/family support counselors in all school
  • Re-evaluate the TEEOSA formula

HEALTH & SEXUAL EDUCATION

  • Comprehensive Sex Ed
  • Screen for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)
  • Increase access to wraparound mental health/trauma-based counseling

HIGHER EDUCATION

  • Free tuition to 2-year community colleges.
  • Create new legislation and look at best practices nationally to mandate true and historically factual black history in all Nebraska public Universities / Colleges
  • Cultural competency courses for students
  • Incentivize retention of college graduates to decrease the brain drain
