Why the Keweenaw? a new and different summer vacation idea

Last year, we moved to the UP of Michigan. That move was the result of spending time there during our honeymoon the previous summer and falling in love with the area all over again, having not visited it in a long, long time. Moving was not an easy decision to make, but it was one that we felt strongly about. The beauty of the region is indescribable. The ability to work and live in an area that most people only visit compelled us forward. We took that risk. We love it here.

But the question is why would our family and friends want to come here for a summer vacation. Well, there are compelling reasons for all of you too. There are relaxing brooks and streams to hike along...

Beautiful views abound all around the peninsula, waiting for you to take them in.

Sunrises
Sunsets
And some pretty spectacular "night lights" in between...

Dining / Nightlife - we do have that...

There are some pretty great local dining choices like Fitzgerald's (http://www.fitzgeralds-mi.com) on the deck, as well as Michigan House / Red Jacket Brewery http://www.michiganhousecafe.com), as well as a place for a nightcap, Shute's....

As you might expect, since Calumet was a booming town back in the early 1900's, there is an abundance of antique stores. The architecture in Calumet, Houghton and Hancock is entrancing.

There are tours of the old copper mines - fascinating, historical and fun! The Keweenaw National Historical Park Headquarters and Visitor Center is in Calumet. Isle Royale, the most remote of all US National Parks, is just a quick ferry ride from Copper Harbor.

AND... that lake... IT IS Superior. And it is all around us to view, kayak on, fish in, lay beside, and yes, if you are brave, jump into....

Well, how about biking - Mountain Biking, Road Biking, Gravel Grinders - it's a haven for cyclists...

There are four major trail systems in the area - all skill levels, based on just how hurt Rob would get should he ride that trail..... all those depicted in the pictures below would result in a fracture of some sort, but he's willing to chance it.

BEER!!! There is some pretty good beer here - local breweries are quite the thing in the UP....

From the top of Brockway Mountain, with views of Lake Superior and Copper Harbor,

To Lake of the Clouds, one of the most wonderful places on earth...

We'd really love for you to come, and we think you will enjoy it more than you realize....

It is relaxing beyond description, and cell service is spotty at the very best - no one will call you!

So, think about it. We know it is not the typical summer vacation destination. It's not a hot beach, but it is great weather - 75 degrees during the day, with polka music (or maybe some bluegrass) wafting through the air at night.... come, see, visit...
