In chapter 14 page 163, the main mood of the chapter is dreary. In the paragraph above when the weather starts to rain the workers would cry. They would be put through work during severe weather, making them experience extreme pain. The only grief that the workers had was crying because they were forced to work whether they liked it or not.
The tone of this paragraph is upsetting. Primo is working with a guy named Kraus, who is Hungarian and doesn't understand French or German. He works very hard and very fast to get the job done and escape the feeling of the bad weather. By working too fast, Kraus was in danger of exhaustion.
