My initial understanding of the Holocaust is that it took place in WWII. It was a time where Jews were being murdered for their own religious beliefs and their freedom was taken from the Nazis.
What I have learned about the Holocaust was the suffering and the experiences of these people had to go through. I found it really depressing how people could be so cruel and have so much haterd against the Jews.
Why did Hitler hate the Jews?
The Holocaust happened because Hitler and the Nazis were racist. They believed the German people were a 'master race', who were superior to others. They even created a league table of 'races' with the Aryans at the top and with Jews, Gypsies and black people at the bottom. These 'inferior' people were seen as a threat to the purity and strength of the German nation. When the Nazis came to power they persecuted these people, took away their human rights and eventually decided that they should be exterminated.
Irena Sendler was a Polish Catholic social worker. During World War II, she was a member of the Polish Underground and also a Polish anti-Holocaust resistance in Warsaw. She helped save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto by providing them with false documents and sheltering them in individual and group children’s homes outside the ghetto.
I think she had a lot of courage because in order to do this you're at risk of getting caught or getting killed. She took an amounounce of courage for providing care for Jewish children and that is brave thing to do.
Over a decade ago the Government of Sudan carried out genocide against Darfuri civilians, murdering 300,000 & displacing over 2 million people. The Sudanese government remains willing to use deadly force against the Darfuri people to further their own political goals. This war is still ongoing today. Killing millions of people due to different types of cultures.
