Weekly Reflections January 6, 2017

Good Afternoon APH families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful, joyous holiday break. It was wonderful to see the girls upon their return. The Faculty and Staff was busy planning for their second semester classes and new elective courses have begun. This semester we are offering an array of electives: “Middle Eastern History,” “Cars and Cities,” “Directing, Acting, and Stage Technology,” “Music Technology,” and “Painting and Mixed Media.”

Our new semester began with an all school meeting. We discussed the importance of dress code, facility cleanliness and some changes to our Wellness program. I encourage you to speak to your daughters to learn more, as their investment in our culture is what allows us to provide them with the best possible experience.

As girls get back into the swing of things, we are reminding them about the importance of sleep and healthy habits. Today is a community day here which means the focus is on our community. At long last, we will hold a ceremony which reveals the five House names. I am excited to relay them to you next week!

We will also be watching the documentary “Miss Representation.” This documentary is incredibly powerful. Miss Representation is a 2011 American documentary film written, directed, and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Mrs. Martins, Mrs. Tripp and I were lucky enough to hear Ms. Newsom speak this fall. We feel this documentary more than supports our mission. Her film explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions by circulating limited and often disparaging portrayals of women.

We want more for your daughters.

Watch the trailer for Miss Representation.

Congratulations

Our students are accepted to college! So far the acceptances are: Colorado State Fort Collins, Columbia College, Champlain College, Merrimack College, and Montserrat College of Art. Several thousand dollars of merit scholarships have also been awarded. We are so happy and proud for our students!

Clubs and Activities

Winter sports resumed practices this week. As did choir, band, a cappella and drama. Mr. Crowley is busily preparing our students to participate in the 2017 DramaFest this March. We will keep you abreast of all pertinent dates.

We have two activities that are coming up that will be fun. On January 12, we have been invited to Metro Rock in Newburyport for some indoor rock climbing by St. John’s Prep Outdoor Club. The cost is $24 which includes rentals and pizza. Interested students should see Ms. Reardon.

On January 13th the students of St. John’s Prep will host APH students for a game night. They will provide pizza, salad and ice cream too. There is no cost. It will be held from 6:30-9:00 and students are responsible for their own transportation. Students interested should see Ms. Calzini. It sounds like it will be fun!

Remember to tell your friends and family about The Academy! February 3rd is our application deadline for Fall 2017. Thank you for your support.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warm Regards,

Julie
