MIRRORS A MARY MARXEN FILM

THE FILM

LOGLINE: A contemporary ballet dancer’s inner critic halts a career-defining performance.

SYNOPSIS: The story opens on center-stage where Crimson, a troubled dancer whose life's desire is to gain affection from anyone outside of herself, is performing a dance before a discerning crowd. On this particular night, Crimson’s inner critic has cleverly suggested that her audience has turned on her, setting off a spiraling panic attack. Crimson retreats inward and soon, the theater walls fall away. She begins a journey outside the realms of reality and into the memories that created her neurosis.

We find ourselves riding in a car through rolling California hills where a devastating, symbolic love scene between Crimson and an unsupportive lover reveals much about Crimson’s past and present. Rejected and forlorn, Crimson seeks validation in a nightclub where strangers seduce her with drinks and dance. Perhaps these are her people. But they turn on her. Suffocated and afraid, she falls backwards into a blackout, landing suddenly on a plush carpet, her childhood carpet. A therapist is there who guides Crimson’s experience. Crimson takes her lead.

Finally, we return to the stage where we left Crimson spiraling. Now, however, something is profoundly different...

INSPIRATION

The story is adapted from a series of poems written by writer/director Mary Marxen and inspired both by painful experiences in her own life and the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s concept of the Mirror Stage. Mary feels compelled to share Mirrors because she has done the work to now live the film’s message: Confronting your fears is the doorway to leading your fullest life.
