MSU Denver: Alumni Career Services March 2016 Newsletter

Since 2011, MSU Denver's Alumni Relations Office has offered a number of career services to alumni and community members. In partnership with the University’s Career Services Department, whose primary focus is assisting current students and alumni who have graduated from the University within the last year, Alumni Career Services primarily provides services to alumni who graduated more than a year and beyond.

The University’s Career Service Center is a student fee supported department, therefore is limited in the services available to alumni, however, alumni have always been invited to attend workshops and networking activities the department has hosted.

The Alumni Career Service team's goal is to offer alumni a lifetime of services available on a more consistent basis, alumni can come to depend upon at every stage of their personal and professional development.

Our Alumni will take their MSU Denver story to all the great places they are going.

What's it all worth?

The recent struggle of college graduates starting a career after graduation has called into question the affordability and values of higher education. A variety of critics ranging from Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to prominent financiers have gone on record questioning higher education's return on investment (Education Advisory Board, 2016). With federal and state funding decreasing, students and their families are taking on increasing amounts of debt in order to finance their education. As a result, students are asking questions about outcomes and the return on investment during the recruitment process. However, degrees don't translate into careers without the proper training designed to prepare students and recent grads to make this transition from students to developing professionals.

"Education is a bubble in a classic sense. To call something a bubble, it must be overpriced and there must be an intense belief in it....People are not getting their money's worth." Peter Thiel, Co-Founder of Paypal, Creator of the 20 Under 20 Foundaion

Universities can no longer depend on making support services available for students to seek help if they "need" it as an acceptable response to the changing face of higher education. Career related curriculum must be built into the programs, much like MSU Denver has now done for years, but the support cannot stop there. According to the Alumni Career Services survey, 60% of the alumni that visit Alumni Career Services at MSU Denver say they did not receive or know of career services available to them while finishing their degree. The need for continued career support even after graduation is growing as institutions work to better display their value proposition. Those that will lead the way are those that are increasingly focusing attention on career services and post-graduation outcomes.

MSU Denver graduates have the skills, Career Coaching teaches them how to highlight what they bring to the table.
