Build Your Bucket is a free family-friendly disaster preparedness expo hosted by the Leon County Government, the City of Tallahassee, and the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The purpose of this event is to prepare citizens of Leon County with the knowledge and supplies necessary to weather the 2018 Hurricane Season (June 1-November 30).
- Date: June 2, 2018
- Time: 9 A.M. - Noon (Gates open at 8:30)
- Location: North Florida Fairgrounds, 441 Paul Russell Rd. Bldg. 2
Attendees should use the Monroe Street entrance to the fairgrounds. Parking is free and will be available on the northwest portion of the property. Handicap parking will be available adjacent to Building 2. Parking attendants will be on hand to help direct traffic.
The first 800 households will receive a free disaster preparedness bucket and critical starter supplies off of the Build Your Bucket checklist. There will be four bucket pick-up stations inside Building 2 at the fairgrounds. More than 30 community response groups will be on hand to educate attendees about local resources to survive and recover from a disaster. Attendees can move at their own pace through the expo.
In order to empower and prepare children for disaster events that can be scary, Red Cross will offer special Pillowcase Project workshops during the expo in the meeting room of Building 2. Children who participate receive their own abbreviated preparedness toolkit, which includes a “My Preparedness Workbook.”
- Pillowcase Project Workshop #1: 9:30 A.M. - 10:15 A.M.
- Pillowcase Project Workshop #2: 10:30 A.M. - 11:15 A.M.
Additionally, a Touch-a-Truck area will be located directly outside Building 2 where attendees can explore vehicles from local response agencies. These agencies include the Tallahassee Fire Department, Leon County Mosquito Control, the Salvation Army and more! It's important for children to be familiar with the appearance of a uniformed first responder so they will be comfortable with one in a disaster.
