A moment of prayer COMpline. The night prayer of the Churh

With us all in lock down and churches and our own chapel closed for worship people are discovering new ways of worshipping and finding time for prayer. What follows is a simple form of Compline - the traditional night prayer of the Church. Simply scroll through, playing the music and watching the videos if you wish to do so, or reading the words on the screens that follow. You may want to light a candle at the start, and have an image, icon or cross before you as you pray. Take you time, breathe and remember that many thousands of others are with you in prayer even if not in your presence. And please pray for each other and the staff at LMH - we need your prayers and pray for you. Thank you.

The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist, steadfast in the faith. 1 Peter 5:8,9

But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Thanks be to God.

Our help is in the name of the Lord. Who has made heaven and earth.

Take a few moments to reflect on the day that is passing. Remember the good things, and be grateful. Be honest about mistakes and failings and resolving to do better let them go in asking for the forgiveness of God.

I confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, that I have sinned in thought, word and deed, through my own grevious fault. Wherefore I pray God to have mercy upon me.

Almighty God, have mercy upon me, forgive me all my sins and deliver me from all evil, confirm and strengthen me in all goodness and bring me to life everlasting; though Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen

May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for amendment of life and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The Compline hymn - you may read it here, and listen to the monks of Mount St Saviour Monastery sing it to the accompaniment of the harp.

Now in the fading light of day, maker of all to you we pray, that in your ever watchful love you'll guide and keep us from above.

Help and protect us through the night, danger and terror put to flight. Never let evil have its way. Preserve us for another day.

Father Almighty this be done, through Jesus Christ, our Lord your Son, whom in the Spirit we adore, who reigns with you forever more.

Psalm 4

Psalm 31.1-6

1 In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust : let me never be put to confusion, deliver me in thy righteousness.

2 Bow down thine ear to me :make haste to deliver me.

3 And be thou my strong rock, and house of defence : that thou mayest save me.

4 For thou art my strong rock, and my castle : be thou also my guide, and lead me for thy name's sake.

5 Draw me out of the net, that they have laid privily for me : for thou art my strength.

6 Into thy hands I commend my spirit : for thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

A short reading from the Bible - Matthew 11:28-30

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you , and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Thanks be to God.

A prayer of committal - you may wish to pause for a few minutes in silence as you pray this prayer.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

The Nunc dimittis - the song of Simeon. You can read it or listen to it being sung

The Prayers.

Lord have mercy upon me, Christ have mercy upon me, Lord have mercy upon me.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen

Blessed art thou, Lord God of our fathers, to be praised and glorified for ever.

I bless the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, I praise him and magnify him for ever.

Blessed art thou, O Lord in the firmament of heaven, to be praised and glorified above all for ever.

The almighty and most merciful Lord guard and give his blessing. Amen

Lighten the darkness, I beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us all from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I will lay down in peace and take my rest, for it is thou, Lord, only that makest me dwell in safety.

Abide with me, O Lord, for it is towards evening and the day is far spent.

As the watchmen look for the morning, so do I look for thee O Christ.

The blessing.

The Almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, bless me, and all whom I love, now and always. Amen.
