The Importance of the Papacy

Jesus appointed Peter the person to look over people and care for them. The pope is very important, he is the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and the Bishop of Rome. He leads more then a billion people around the world. He represents Christ's love and concern for every single individual.

Defending the Primacy of the Pope

Papal primacy are the opponents of the authority of the Pope and universal jurisdiction over the Church. Without the pope there would be no authority of the college or bishops, says the Catechism. The first Vatican Church defined papal infallibility, it says that the Pope is preserved from error when teaching dogmatically.

The Primacy of Peter

“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Mt 16:19). This proves that Peter was very important and had a unique authority over the Church.

Different teaching of Primacy between 1st Vatican Council and 2nd Vatican Council

The First Vatican Council said that the Pope is preserved from error when teaching dogmatically on matter of faith and morals. In the second Vatican Council began its teaching first on the ministry of the bishops and then addressed the pope in relationship to the bishops.
