First Way Holy Spirit Guides and Influences the Church
The Holy Spirit prepares people for God and the Church. It goes out with its grace, to draw the community to Christ. The Holy Spirit opens the minds of the people to become aware and prepare themselves for God and his teachings (The Cathechism of the Catholic Church).
"But you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit which will come on you." (Acts of the Apostles Chp. 1) This explains how the Holy Spirit will empower you and make you stronger to truly understand and embrace God.
"It's impossible to follow God unless we are led by the Spirit. And the only way to be led by the Spirit is to follow God's command to be filled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). (Christianity Today) This explains how the Holy Spirit cannot be turned away from and that without it we would not be able to fully give to and understand God.
“Acts describes how the Holy Spirit descended on those in the room in the form of “tongues of fire.” (Textbook) This shows how the Holy Spirit was able to interpret in different languages the teachings of God, and provide information to all.
Second Way the Holy Spirit Guides and Influences the Church
"He who believeth in me as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" And the Evangelist explains, This he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive." (Papal Encyclical) This explains that in by believing in God and the Spirit and doing good by others will receive from God. They will receive his everlasting love, trust, and faith.
"I shall pour out my Spirit on all humanity. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young people shall see visions, your old people dream dreams." (Acts of the Apostles Chp. 2) This explains that God no matter what will always pour his everlasting love over anyone, no matter who or what they have done. It shows how God will always be there for you through the Spirit, and will always give himself for anyone.
In John 14, for example, Jesus says the Holy Spirit will comfort us when we're hurting. "I will not leave you as orphans," Jesus says (14:18), promising that the Spirit will bring us peace (14:27). (Christianity Today) This shows that the Spirit will never abandon us and will always be there to protect us. It shows that Jesus promises that we will never be left alone.
“The Holy Spirit’s presence continues to help the Church fulfill her mission. The human Church is filled with some good people trying their best to live the Good News passed on since the time of the Apostles. ” (Textbook) This shows that through the Spirit we are led to better lives of faith and God. Through the Church and Spirit we can live better lives through Church and grow and prosper in our faith.
Contemporary Examples of the Holy Spirit's presence in the Church
1. During the sacrament of Confirmation, I remember being engulfed in a rush of light and happiness. As the priest laid his hands and placed the ointment on my head I felt a rush of warmth and hope race through my body. I was then put in a new position in my life of faith in the Spirit and in God, where I can be a better Catholic and live out my life as Jesus did.
2. A work of the Holy Spirit is from an article from bible.org. It said, "A church member once told me the story of his chronically ill coworker. One day he approached her and said, “In three days you will be well.” He had never said such a thing in his life. He was just as surprised as the coworker. He prayed for three days, and on the third day, the coworker became well. When the whole story was told to her, she became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. "You must repent,' Peter answered, 'and every one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". (Bible)
Holy Spirit as a continuation of Jesus and his ministry
"They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak different languages as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves. Now there were devout men living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven". (Acts Chapter 2)
At Pentecost the Holy Spirit came down to the Apostles and filled them with the Spirit as they spoke in different tongues. They were to spread the word of God to all the people around the world, and preach.
Today this looks like when people go to Church and are filled by the preaching and teachings of the priest and the Bible. As they go and receive the sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation, they can truly embrace the Spirit and God and what it's all about. They can be filled with the good news and can spread it to others by doing good and showing them what it is like to act like Jesus.
This relates to me because through God and the Holy Spirit I can lead a happier and more faithful life. Through the Spirit I can grow in my faith through mass and prayer and spread the good news through the community. I can show others what it is like to be a good Catholic and lead a good life. I can then conclude that through the Spirit I can grow in my faith and grow closer to God along with friends no family to help me through my journey.
