Activating Your Authority A Bible Study

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4 NIV

Jesus is seated on the throne at the right hand of the Father. A position of authority. Where are you? In Jesus. A position of authority

Suppose you received a red BMW for your birthday. You were given the keys and permission to take the car anywhere you pleased. You held the keys gingerly in your hand and admired the beautiful car. But you never drove it. Maybe you were afraid of crashing the car. Maybe you felt you didn't deserve the car. But, for whatever reason, you never drove it. How good would it be to have the keys to a BMW and never drive it?

As the church, we have been given the keys to the kingdom, the keys of authority (Matt. 16:19). Having the keys is one thing. Using the keys is another.

How do we activate our authority?

Read Matthew 16:18-19

Binding = tying up the enemy and his works (rebuking him, casting him out)

Loosing = releasing the Holy Spirit (the opposite of the enemy) into situations

Read James 4:7

In the place of intercession, we activate our spiritual authority by binding the enemy and loosing the Holy Spirit over individuals, families, communities and nations.

Read 2 Chronicles 20:20-22

What strategy was used to defeat the enemy?

Worshipping God is a way to activate our authority. Where the praise of God exists, the enemy has to flee. He can't stand to be around the worship of God.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion– to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. Isaiah 61:3 NIV

We have been anointed to take up authority in a much different way than the world does. We activate our authority through caring in practical ways for the poor, the hopeless and those suffering in the dark.

They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Revelation 12:11 NIV

Declaration of our testimony is another powerful way to activate the authority of God.

We activate our authority by:

  1. Intercession (binding and loosing)
  2. Worship
  3. Practical service of the poor
  4. Declaration
