Auditions made simple and easy

Wind Players

There are two rounds of auditions for new wind players. 2021 Round One auditions consists of all wind players (regardless of major) submitting a Youtube video recording of yourself playing your instrument. This includes music majors, so even if you have confirmed acceptance into the LSU School of Music on the instrument you are auditioning on, you need to submit a video audition. The deadline to register for an audition has been extended to June 24th.

Three Easy Steps

Step 1: Video record yourself playing the following in one take with no edits in between performances:

  1. Chromatic scale showcasing your full range (tongued ascending & slurred descending)
  2. An etude showcasing your musical technique, facility, and talent. This could be a solo from Solo & Ensemble or an etude you used to audition for an honor band or all-state band (minimum 30 seconds in length). This should not be music from your concert band literature or pop music performed in marching band.

Step 2: Upload video to Youtube and make sure the file is marked 'Unlisted"

Step 3: Copy the URL of your unlisted link and either 1) include the link in your audition registration form or 2) email the link (along with your name and instrument) to bands@lsu.edu.

Some helpful video recording tips:

  1. Record in landscape mode (sideways) in the highest quality on your camera/phone.
  2. State your name and high school at the beginning of the video (ex. "My name is Mike Tiger from LSU High School").
  3. State what you are playing before you play it (ex. "My prepared piece is called 'Presto'").
  4. Remember, it must all be recorded in one take (non stop).
Entertain fans in Death Valley as you become part of one of the greatest traditions in all of college football!

Both new and returning members will need to complete the 2021 Wind Player Membership form below. This form allows the option to include your Youtube link with this Round 1 application, or you may email the link of the performance to bands@lsu.edu (new members only). Returning members do not need to submit a Round One video audition.

The final date to submit a video is June 24th. However, it is strongly encouraged to submit your video as soon as possible for priority selection.

After you complete the membership form and submit your video audition (new members), you will receive correspondence within 2-4 weeks of your submission, so it is encouraged to complete your membership form and submit your video audition as soon as possible.

Passing Round 1 means you are invited to Round Two, the Tiger Band Camp, which is an immersive week-long training camp held just prior to the start of classes in August. During this camp, we will teach our two marching styles for our pregame and halftime shows, practice drill, and learn school songs. We will evaluate marching and playing throughout the camp, and determine the final 325-member roster of the Tiger Band through rounds of cuts at the end of the camp.

Drumline Auditions:

If you are auditioning for drumline, there is only one audition prior to Tiger Band camp. Auditions for the LSU Drumline will take place on Friday, August 13 in the Tiger Band Hall. If you are interested in being a part of the 2021 drumline, we highly encourage you to sign up to be in our private Facebook audition group to learn specific aspects to our drumline technique, warm-ups, cadences, and the audition process. You will receive the Facebook group link after you complete the 2021 TB Drumline Audition Registration Form below.

In addition, attend one of our clinic dates where we will go over our style, exercises, and audition materials. We strongly encourage candidates to prepare an audition on multiple sub-sections. This will help ensure placement even if you aren’t selected for your first choice (snare, tenor, bass, etc). The following clinic and auditions timeline as listed below:

  • Friday, June 25th - Tiger Band Hall - 1 - 4 pm
  • Friday, July 9th - Tiger Band Hall - 1 - 4 pm

FAQ

Will there be band if we are still in a pandemic? Yes! Tiger Band successfully navigated the 2020 season by numerous safety and health precautions into consideration and we are proud to report that we had ZERO community spread reports within Tiger Band rehearsals or our performances.

Do I have to be a music major to be in TB? - No, as a matter of fact, the majority of TB (over 75%) is made up of majors from other colleges and schools across campus including engineering, mass communication, etc.

Are there any scholarship opportunities with TB? - Yes there are several opportunities. If you are selected as a member, you will automatically receive a $1000 stipend. Additionally, we do have additional scholarship opportunities based on director recommendations, the department’s instrumental needs, and the student's playing ability.

Is there a GPA/credit requirement to be in TB? - Every member of Tiger Band must have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Additionally, all members must be full-time students at LSU with a minimum of 12 credit hours. However, if you drop below full-time status after you make the band, you will forfeit your membership stipend.

How much rehearsal time is required? - TB is a university course that you register for when you select your classes (MUS 4250). We only rehearse 4 days a week for an hour and a half. If we have a home game, we have a rehearsal the morning of the game.

How much does it cost to be in TB? - There are no costs to you! In fact, we pay you! The Department of Bands covers all costs including dry cleaning of your uniform, instrument repairs, travel (Yes, you do not pay extra fees to travel with us!), etc. in addition to your $1000 stipend. For returning members, we also offer student staff positions which include additional payments (Equipment manager, librarians, Social Outreach Team, Etc).

How often do we travel? - Barring any changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, TB tries to take one full band trip during the regular season, a 100 member pep band to all away games, then a full band trip for the bowl game. Once again, the Department of Bands covers your costs including per diem for meals.

How many shows does TB do per season? - This is based on how many home games we have, but we typically perform 4-6 different shows per season. This is one of the biggest differences between TB and high school band, and our students love the variety that comes with our seasons. Shows never become dull because we are always learning new ones!
