To be able to vote when you are "Colored" is very difficult and not a lot of people were able to. The "Colored school were not very nice and had a lot of kids that had to sit on benches instead of desks. First step, you are put through a series of questions that would be asked by a white person. If you made it past that step you went and talked to a head government official which could also get you hanged for even trying to vote.
Many people use the sign of shaking hands as a greeting, but you would get punished if you shook a hand and you were "Colored". The Jim Crow Laws stated that you would get hung if you were caught shaking hands with whites. When they were caught they didn't have the rights top go to trail by Jury to prove they are innocent.
The Great Depression
The Roll of Thunder was taken place when the Great Depression had started. The Great Depression started around the 1920's to 1930's when the stock market crashed, cause it many Americans to lose there jobs. The work many people did find was very hard and also caused them to be away from there family for long periods of time. Also a drought occurred so it was very hard to farm, which caused many sandstorms. Many people were effected physically because in Roll of Thunder many black people had rights that weren't applied to whites people. Cassie and her brothers have to walk to school miles away. There dad travels to Louisiana to weird on the railroads so that they can keep their family farm.
Abolishment Of Slavery
The end of Slavery meant that African Americans wouldn't be slaves but they would be looked down upon by the whites. "And I hereby call upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages." because she’s white (Taylor 214)
Lynching is when a person, usually is a black, is hung without a legal trial. Lynching was used as a punishment but it usually only occurred if you were black and did something as simple as not stopping for a white person that gets to drive ahead of you. In Roll of Thunder, the Wallaces talk about lynching Papa, TJ, and Mr. Morrison because of what they did to the Wallaces. It says in the book that they "Heard tell they lynched a boy a few days ago at Crosston".
