The Microscope

Taking Care of a Microscope

Carrying, Storing, and Cleaning

Carrying

Always use two hands one around the arm and one under the base. When picking up and putting down do so carefully.

Storing

When storing a microscope place dust cover over the top and store in the cabinet.

Cleaning

Clean the microscopes eyepiece lens, objective lenses, glass condenser lens, and glass opening on stage with a lens tissue or cotton swab.

Using the Microscope

Low Power

  • center - pointer
  • focus - coarse adjustment
  • light - diaphragm
  • tweak - fine focus

Medium Power

  • center - pointer
  • focus - coarse adjustment
  • light - diaphragm
  • tweak - fine focus

High Power

  • center - pointer
  • focus - coarse adjustment
  • light - diaphragm
  • tweak - fine focus

Making the Wet Mount

Materials:

  • Glass Slide
  • Cover Slip
  • Object
  • Pipet
  • Water
  • Stain (if needed)
  1. clean glass slide
  2. clean glass cover slip
  3. add object (half the size of pinky finger nail, thin enough to see through)
  4. add one drop of water
  5. add one drop of stain ( if needed )
  6. place cover slip on top
