OMAHA ATHLETICS REWIND DEC. 26, 2016 - JAN. 1, 2017

HOCKEY

The Omaha hockey team earned its second sweep of the season last weekend, beating Lake Superior State 4-1 and 5-3. On Friday, Fredrik Olofsson had a goal and two assists to lead the Mavericks. Austin Ortega tied an NCAA record by scoring his 23rd career game-winning goal. Evan Weninger made 28 saves in the win.

On Saturday, Ortega had a goal and two assists, and Ian Brady had three assists to help the Mavericks finish the sweep of the Lakers, 5-3. UNO scored all five goals in the third period, erasing a 2-0 deficit to improve to 11-6-3 this season. Kris Oldham made 31 saves in the victory.

Austin Ortega tied two other players for the NCAA record for career game-winning goals when he scored his 23rd on Friday against Lake Superior State.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Omaha men's basketball team kicked off Summit League play last week, opening with an 86-69 loss at South Dakota on Thursday. Zach Jackson paced the Mavericks with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and Mitch Hahn added 12 points with four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist. Marcus Tyus and Zach Pirog each had a team-high six rebounds.

On Saturday, Omaha dropped an 82-70 decision at North Dakota State. Tyus scored a team-high 18 points, hitting 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Jackson added 13 points with four more triples and six rebounds, while Hahn put up 12 points, six boards, two assists and a block. Tra-Deon Hollins contributed 12 more points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals, and Tre'Shawn Thurman finished with a team-leading nine caroms alongside eight points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Omaha women’s basketball team went 1-1 last week. On Wednesday, UNO lost its Summit League opener to Oral Roberts, 67-65. Michaela Dapprich scored a team-high 20 points, while Mikaela Shaw had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Five Mavericks scored in double figures as Omaha took down York College, 106-37, on Sunday in non-conference play. Michaela Dapprich led the Mavericks with 18 points and six assists. Mikaela Shaw had 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Courtney Vaccher added 16 points and six rebounds.
