TECHNOLOGY
  • 1880- Hearing aid- Thin sheet of hard rubber or cardboard, that sends vibrations to the auditory nerve
  • 1884- Thrill Ride- L.N. Thompson, invites people to his new thrill ride, the roller coaster
  • 1888- Kodak Camera- George Eastman introduces a hand-held box camera for portable use.
  • 1889- Dishwasher- Mrs. WA Cockran eases kitchen labor by producing a practical dishwasher

Food 

  • 1880- Chocolate Pies- make plain cupcake in Washington-pie plate. cut cake in half and put spread in between.
  • 1883- Dickens' Christmas Pudding- homemade pudding made in special occasions

WOMEN'S RIGHTS 

1880-1890

  • Women couldn't own property
  • Women couldn't keep their own wages.
  • Women weren't able to enter into contracts

  • 1881- James Garfield inaugurated as President
  • 1881- James Garfield assassinated, Chester A. Arthur inaugurated as president.
  • 1889- North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington become states.

1890's

Technology
  • 1891- Escalators- Jesse W. Reno, introduces his moving stairway.
  • 1898- Submarines- J.P Holland torpedo boat company, introduces submarines.

Women's Rights 

  • 1890-National Women Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association merge to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
  • 1893- Colorado adopts an amendment that grants women the right to vote.
  • 1896- Utah and Idaho later give the right to vote to women.
  • 1896- National Association of colored women is formed
US Major Events
  • 1896- Plessy v. Ferguson. "separate but equal"
  • 1897- William McKinley becomes the 25th president
  • 1898- Spanish-American War: We get Puerto Rico, Guam, and Philippines
  • 1898- U.S. Annexes Hawaii

1900's

Major Events
  • 1901- McKinley's second inauguration. He is then shot Sept. 6 later that year. Theodore Roosevelt later becomes president.
  • 1905- Theodore Roosevelt second inauguration
  • 1908- Bureau of Investigation is established
  • 1909- Taft is inaugurated as the 27th president.

1910's

  • 1913- Woodrow Wilson becomes the 28th President
  • 1913- Alice Paul and Lucy Burns form the Congressional Union
  • 1914-1918- U.S. enters World War I
  • 1915- First long distance telephone
  • 1916- Margaret Sanger opens the first U.S birth- control clinic
  • 1918- Worldwide Influenza Epidemic, nearly 20 million dead.

1920's

Education
  • 1922- International Council for Exceptional Children is founded at Columbia University Teachers College.
  • 1925- Tennessee vs. John Scopes, charged with teaching evolution
  • 1926- The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is first administered.
Women's Rights & Major Events
  • 1920- The Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor is formed. Later the 19th amendment is ratified
  • 1921- Margaret Sanger founds the American Birth Control League.
  • 1929- The Great Depression begins with the Stock market crash in October.

  • 1922- Jell-O Recipes
  • 1924- Pineapple upside-down cake & Caesar salad, become a thing
  • 1925- George Washing Carver's Peanut recipe
  • 1927- S'mores are created
Technology
  • 1920- The first regular commercial radio broadcast
  • 1924- Executions, Nevada introduces death by gas chambers
  • 1927- Philo Farnsworth demonstrates the first television.

1930's

  • 1931- U.S adopts The Star-Spangled Banner as national anthem
  • 1932- Hattie Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas is the first woman elected to the U.S Senate
  • 1932- FDR becomes President and begins to initiate his New Deal
  • 1935- Mary McLeod Bethune organized the National Council of Negro Women.
  • 1938- Fair Labor Standard Act is passed, minimum wage becomes .25 per hour
  • 1939- WWII Begins

  • 1930's- Margaritas, Philly cheese steak, and banana bread hit the menus
  • 1936- No-Bake cookies become a thing

  • 1932- Dr. William Bennett Kouwenhoven devlops the defibrillator
  • 1938- The Biro brothers present the ballpoint pens
  • 1939- Digital Computers are introduced

  • 1944- G.I. Bill of Rights allows many veterans to return to school
  • 1946- Baby boomers born causing massive increase in students
  • 1948- McCollum v. Board of Education, students can participate in religious education in the public school classrooms

  • 1941- Rice Krispies treats are invented
  • 1943- Nanchos become a thing
  • 1944- Tortilla soup is introduced
  • 1946- 79th congress approves the National School Lunch Act
Major Events
  • 1941- U.S enters WWII after Pearl Harbor gets attacked by Japan
  • 1945- WWII ends
  • 1949- North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is established

  • 1954- Brown v. Board of Education , "separate educational facilities are unequal"
  • 1958- National Defense Education Act increases funding for science and math, partially because of Sputnik.
  • 1959- The ACT test is first administered
Technology
  • 1953- 1st open heart surgery in which blood is artificially circulated and oxygenated by a heart-lung machine.
  • 1955- The Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine

  • 1953- Eisenhower becomes the 34th president
  • 1955- Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat, which leads to the Civil Rights Movement.
  • 1955- The Daughter of Bilitis, first lesbian organization in the U.S.
  • 1958- Explorer I , first American satellite

  • 1960s: Green Eggs & Ham become a thing after being inspired by Dr. Seuss
  • 1960: Red Velvet Cake is added to the bakery menus

  • 1960- Theodore H. Maiman Creates the first laser
  • 1969- NASA'a Apollo 11 spacecraft touches down on the moon's surface

  • 1981- NASA successfully launches and lands its reusable spacecraft, the Space Shuttle
  • 1988- Apple files a suit charging that Microsoft has pirated Apple's graphical interface.

  • 1981- U.S hostage held in Iran and released after 444 days
  • 1989- George H. W. Bush becomes the 41st president
