Ode to Irish Coffee

The history of the Irish Coffee is fascinating. Some cocktails have confused origins and the stories told about how they were invented are uncertain or even at times conflicting, whereas when we talk about Irish Coffee there are none of these major doubts, except perhaps one, relating to where it was invented

Unlike its other coffee recipes, this is not the fruit of coincidence or the imagination of some experimenter: rather its recipe was the response to the need for a hot drink, pleasing and able to warm both the body and the spirit

The most famous variations on this drink are French coffee, where in place of the whiskey they use Cognac or Calvados, and American Coffee (careful not to confuse this with caffè americano, especially at breakfast), where the Irish whiskey is replaced with bourbon. Furthermore, it would seem that the brown sugar was added later on, the first Irish Coffee contained white sugar

Ingredients: 35 ml of espresso; 5 g of cane sugar; 30 g of Irish whiskey; 60 g fresh liquid cream; coffee powder for decorating

Instructions:

Pre-heat the glass, by pouring hot water into it and then throwing it away. Put the cane sugar in the serving glass. Prepare a long espresso in a small ceramic jug and mix it with the cane sugar directly in the glass. At this point, add the Irish whiskey to the mix

Dear Scorpio, you are as dark as a black coffee and also you are as strong as Livorno Punch. It’s all you need to start your confident and passionate day and never forget that a good shot of Livorno Punch can be as complex as your personality!

Ode to Livorno Punch coffee

If you go to Livorno and stop off at a bar, allow yourself the little temptation of a steaming glass of Livorno Punch. Much more than just a coffee with a shot of alcohol, this drink has distant origins and is, to this day, the pride and joy of the city

Right from the beginning, Punch has always been considered by the Livorno population as an effective remedy for many ailments: just drink a little and … it’s away with any ailment. Whether this is true or not, what is sure is that the name of this drink comes from the English word “punch”, and that there were originally five essential English ingredients: tea, sugar, brandy, lemon and cinnamon. To understand how this then became transformed into the Tuscan version, which uses coffee instead of tea and liqueur instead of brandy, we need to go back in time to the early XVIII century

It would appear that a ship coming from the Americas was carrying a cargo of rum and headed for Livorno. During a storm, some of the barrels of rum were accidentally broken, and the contents flooded over the nearby sacks of coffee beans. Consequently, these bags of rum-soaked beans had to be sold at a lower price. However, the rum flavored coffee was an instant success, so much so that people tried to replicate it and sell it in many establishments

A quick note concerning the legend of “the sail”, in other words the lemon peel which is essential to the Livorno punch recipe. The most likely hypothesis is that the host on duty one day had the habit of rubbing a slice of lemon cut in half along the rim of the glass to clean it, thus leaving a little of its characteristic flavor which blended with the coffee and rum. The half slice was then dipped into the drink, creating what is known today as “the sail”

Ingredients: 100 g of strong coffee; 50 g of fantasia rum; 1 teaspoon of sugar; zest of half a lemon

Instructions:

First of all, put a spoonful of sugar into the glass and then immediately pour in the rum. With the steam arm of the espresso machine bring the mixture to the boil: when you start to see small bubbles on the surface, move and leave the glass and mixture to rest, waiting for the sugar to dissolve with the heat of the steam

Prepare a very concentrated espresso. Place the glass, holding it in a leaning position, under the spout of the espresso machine, until the foam reaches the rim; then rotate the glass a little. Once the coffee extraction is finished, rest the glass, you will find a firm foam on the surface

Finally, add a twist of lemon and drink hot

9. Sagittarius - Mont Blanc coffee
Sagittarius

Dear Sagittarius, you bring passion into the life, you’re super adventurous and you love nice flavors, that’s why this special blend is just perfect for you. Warm up with a good Mont Blanc coffee and start a new adventure!

Ode to Mont Blanc coffee

Do you love coffee but can’t give up the sweetness of the cream ? The Mont Blanc, the mouth-watering espresso with only the foam part of the milk added and not the liquid, is the recipe for you

Served in a glass cup so you can see the color contrast between the black of the coffee and the light fluffy white of the cream, the Mont Blanc is perfect for giving yourself that tasty break at the bar or for a coup de theatre among friends

Ingredients: 7 g of ground coffee powder; 30 g of fresh whole milk

Instructions:

Prepare an espresso in the traditional way and pour it directly into the serving glass. Foam the milk in the milk jug, using the steaming arm of the espresso machine. Using a spoon to help you, ease the foamed milk onto the surface of the espresso, until you fill the glass to the top

The sumptuous variations on the Mont Blanc recipe

Why settle for the sweetness of the cream when you can also add hazelnuts? Once you get to the last stage of the preparation we recommend sprinkling some crumbled hazelnuts carefully onto your “sweet” snowy mountain top. Or alternatively, we recommend a little coffee powder sprinkled over the top of the cream peak

This way the coffee flavor is a double protagonist, both at the beginning …and at the end
