What is Pokemon?

Pokemon is a long running media franchise managed by The Pokemon Company and a Japanese association between Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures. The franchise is shared between the three companies but is solely owned by Nintendo. The franchise was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995 and is focused on fictional creatures called "Pokémon", which the humans, known as Pokémon Trainers, catch and train to battle each other for sport.

Pokémon can be seen throughout the Japanese culture.

The Pokémon franchise started as a pair of video games for the original Game Boy, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. Today the Franchise has expanded into more video games for all different consoles, trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books, manga and toys. Pokémon is the second-most succesful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's Mario Franchise.
