Cabra Matters Term 2 Week 10 2019

Principal's Report

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

Well, can you believe that we are half way through the year? Once again, we have worked hard and enjoyed a busy term of learning and activity. We have all worked that hard that we deserve a holiday which will begin this MONDAY, JULY 8. Students return to school for Term 3 on TUESDAY, JULY 23. On Monday, July 22, the staff will participate in a School Development Day when they will undertake professional learning to support their work with the students.

As I reflect upon all that we have done in Term 2, I recall the following activities in which our students, parents and carers have participated, in addition to the daily work of the staff with the students in the classroom.

• Cross Country Carnival

• Sydney Writers’ Festival

• School Photos

• Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN

• Homework Centre

• PATCH Parents program

• Parents Excursion to the Art Gallery

• Cyber Safety for Stage 2

• Stage 3 to First Foot Forward at Western Sydney University

• PSSA competitions

• Debating competition

• Year 5 lessons at Cabramatta High

• SCRABBLE Tournament

• Dental screening

• Year 1 visited the local supermarket

• Stage 3 Food Festival

• P and C Meetings

• Year 2 visited Elizabeth Macarthur Farm

• Year 4 visited the Camden Field Studies Centre

• Pyjama Day

• Track Suit Day

• Public Speaking

• Year 1 to Powerhouse Museum

• Choir performed at the Cabramatta High School concert

Each of these learning activities are the result of the hard work of students, parents/carers and staff. They demonstrate that the school provides a wide range of interesting and engaging opportunities for everyone who calls our school their home. I sincerely thank everyone for their contributions to another very successful term.

Next term, we look forward to NAIDOC Week, with a visit by an Aboriginal cultural group, Spelling Bee, Tournament of the Minds, Disco, Book Week, Book Character Parade, Avalon PS School Band and Year 6 visit, NRL Skills sessions. Athletics carnival and K-2 Fun Day and the Production. It looks like we have another term packed with fun and learning.

We say farewell to Ms Burton who has taught 3/6B this year. Ms Burton has received a transfer to Guise Public School. We thank her very much for her work with our students and wish her well. We welcome Ms Charters, who has worked at Miller Public school, and will replace Ms Burton.

We welcome back Ms Miles who has returned from Maternity Leave.

At this time of the year the whales from Antarctica are swimming north to the warmer waters of Queensland to have their young. This is a very long journey. If you would like to see the whales as they pass through, go to the Kamay Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell in the Sutherland Shire. There is a whale observation platform which provides a great view to the ocean and the whales as they spurt water and roll over the waves.

I wish all families a safe and happy winter holiday. We look forward to seeing you on TUESDAY, JULY 23 to continue our wonderful learning journey.

Best wishes.

Glen Stelzer

Technology Challenge

In peer support last week, Year 3 worked with their Stage 3 buddies to produce a lip sync challenge video. The results will be posted to the students' Google Classroom. A great deal of fun was had by all and students continue to develop their technology skills.

Maths Fun with Year 3

Year 3 Maths were asked to independently create three animal shapes using the origami guides. The follow up lesson will be to investigate and record the 2D shapes they see in each animal. Little brains were focused and challenged. The koala was a little tricky!
