Alexander the Great was born in Macedonia on July 20th,356 B.C. to parents King Philip II of Macedon and Queen Olympia. Aristotle tutored Alexander helping him with philosophy, poetry, drama, science and politics. A few years later he became a soldier and went on his first military expedition, against the Thracian tribes. Then Alexander took charge of the Companion Cavalry and aided his father in defeating the Athenian and Theban armies at Chaeronea.
During Alexanders sisters wedding King Phillip II was murdered. Alexander then become the king at the age of 20. He quickly made sure the army was on his side and that they would support him. A lot of the city-states were not happy at all that a 20 year old was controlling them. He made sure that his army was ready to fight.
Thedes thought that since Alexander had just became the king that they were in a time of weakness. So they had planned on attacking Macedonia during this time but Alexander heard about this situation and immedielty took action. He then marched his army to Thebes to attack. They got there so fast that Thebes didnt even have time to prepare. Alexander and his troops wiped out Thebes he killed most of the people and sold the survivors into slavery. He want to use this situation as an example to everyone else so that they wouldnt attack.
Alexander soon defeats Persia. the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. He overthrew the Persian King Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety. This is also called The Battle of Gaugamela. He was able to defeat him because Alexander ruled the largest empire of the ancient world at the time.
Alexander next conquered all of Egypt. He also created the city of Alexandria. This was the second largest city in Egypt. It became an important center of the Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Hellenistic and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1000 years. Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Alexander defeated King Porus' armies in northern India a little later.
Alexander was heading to the Ganges when his army quit on him. They had been fighting and marching for around 11 years and they were tired of it. They wanted to be back with their familys. Alexander had planned on going back later but he ran out of time when he died shortly after returning home. He was only 32 years old. His empire that he had built collapsed eventually.
