DESTINATION OVERVIEW

Bogotá, Colombia

Bogotá is the capital and largest city in Colombia. A melting pot of people from around the country, it is diverse and multicultural, with a blend of modern and colonial architecture. The predominant colors in Bogotá are the green of the city’s many parks and the eastern mountains overlooking the sanctuaries of Monserrate and Guadalupe, and the rich red of its many brick buildings.

Hotel Estelar Windsor House

Hotel Estelar Windsor House in an upscale all-suite hotel, set in a stately brick building in the Chico neighborhood, lies 10 minutes' walk from 93 Park, a popular shopping and dining area, and 7 km from Estadio El Campín soccer stadium.

DESTINATION OVERVIEW

Cartagena, Colombia

The sea breeze and the sunset that transform the colors of 400-year-old houses enchant visitors in Cartagena de Indias. A World Heritage Site, this city was founded by Pedro de Heredia in 1533; the colonial architecture of its buildings is protected by the most complete set of fortifications in South America.

Cartagena, Colombia is the sum of its incredible parts; its colonial, republican and modern architecture, the temptation of its vibrant nightlife, its cultural festivals, exuberant landscapes, magnificent beaches, outstanding gastronomic offerings and its important hotel and tourism infrastructure. It is a fantastic city that guards the secrets of its history in its walls and balconies, its buildings and its narrow, cobbled streets.

Framed by its beautiful bay, Cartagena de Indias is one of the best preserved and most enchanting cities in the Americas.

DAY 2: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2022 | Bogotá City Tour

DAY 2

We'll start the day with a walking tour of the colonial section of La Candelaria, stopping at Plaza de Bolivar, the main square of the city. Surrounding the square, we'll see the Cathedral, Palace of Congress, the Cardinal's Palace and the colonial church of El Sagrario.

Next, to the astonishing Gold Museum, where we'll see the world's greatest collection of pre-Hispanic native gold crafts. Continue to the Fernando Botero Museum, housing many of the paintings and sculptures of this world-famous contemporary Colombian artist. Let the Colombian lifestyle sink in during an included coffee break.

Then, we'll stop to play an energetic local game of Tejo*, the national sport of Colombia. Originally, game play consisted of hurling golden discs into a hole, at a distance of about 65 feet. However, the conquistadors did make their own subtle improvement to the game; they added explosives. Today, the game is played with metal disks in fields across the country. You will learn how to play and try your hand at throwing the disk.

The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the city independently, with its more than 60 galleries and museums and shops with the latest fashions or, join the optional Funicular Train Ride** up to Monserrate for great views of the city. You will also visit the 17th-century church and its El Señor Caído Shrine, a popular place for pilgrims and prayers for years.

During the evening, we'll join our Tour Manager for a walking tour to Parque de la 93 and its surroundings with many pubs and restaurants so we can enjoy the exciting nightlife of Bogota.

See expansive views of the city, sea and the port zone as we make our way to the San Felipe castle-fortress built on San Lazaro Hill, the largest in South America, to defend the city from pirate attacks.

At the walled city, walk through the multicolored houses and buildings of the Old City of Cartagena. Visit San Pedro Claver Sanctuary and Church built in the mid-17th century. Then, on to "The Vaults", archways built in the late 1700's, within the walled city that were used to store armaments and later as a prison. Today, the entire area is a thriving artisans' center with beautiful local handicrafts. Remainder of the day is at leisure.
