Weekly Reflections: September 30, 2016 from the desk of Mrs. Calzini

Dear APH families,

This past week has been filled with many exciting activities as our community begins to find our rhythm. The girls are acclimating to PBL and all that it entails.

Academic Highlights

Our classes have some amazing projects in process. One such project is happening in our Pre-Calculus class. The students are using Desmos, an online graphing calculator to create works of art all while utilizing a variety of functions, transformations, and domain restrictions as their artistic medium. We will keep you updated on their progress as well as showcase other projects in the upcoming weeks.

Also, in our Critical Exploration of Modern Issues class students are being kept on their toes with the “envelope challenge.” Mrs. Cook has asked the faculty to randomly spring an envelope on the students that present a statistical claim. Students need to stop what they are doing, analyze the data without any technology to see if the claim seems plausible on the “back of the envelope.” We have found them in stairwells, at lunch and in between classes working out the problems!

Local community member Tom Jones has outfitted our band with numerous instruments. He and his wife Lauren founded the Musary, a foundation that lends instruments to students interested in learning and performing music in honor of Lauren’s late brother. The Jones Family has helped many students and schools and have been integral in helping our Rock Band get started. Thank you Tom and Lauren.

Service Updates

This past weekend our students and faculty participated in two service projects.

On Saturday, the students helped out at the Northeast ARC Festival. Northeast Arc supports people with disabilities. Our students helped with face painting, ran the arts and craft stations, and assisted with small animals/petting station. Their support was much appreciated.

On Sunday our students, families and some faculty participated in the 5K walk/run for Best Buddies. This event is always inspiring and we appreciate all those who participated.

Athletics Updates

Our soccer team held their own against Marblehead on Wednesday. Although they lost 1-0, the team really worked well together and played hard. The coach said that overall they show a lot of improvement.

Our volleyball team had a match against Newburyport. The match was close, as victory was only a couple of points away. They lost but they battled throughout the matches. The other team’s coach commented in all of his years of coaching, he has never seen a set go so far. The first set was an unprecedented 38-40! Great job girls!

Our cross country team rose to the occasion against several schools: Landmark, Pingree, Beaver Country Day, Newton Country Day, and Lexington Christian Academy. Fiona Kelley took sixth place and Isabella Carroll took seventh place, Sophie Chabot took 13th and Mikalya Johnson got 41st place out of 60 runners! Outstanding girls!

Congratulations to Mikayla Johnson who took five minutes off her time, and ran a personal best.

Open House

APH is holding our first open house this Sunday, October 2nd from 2:00-4:00 pm. Over 30 students have signed up to be Student Ambassadors. We are so appreciative of their excitement, support and their energy. Thank you to all the parents who agreed to come and help as well. Please spread the word.

Please take a moment to tell us something awesome about you or your daughter's experience as a member of The APH Community. Click the link below and type away! We are excited and eager to hear from you!

Renovation Updates

New Furniture-- Feel free to come check it out during our Open House this Sunday open or another time. The APH Bistro will be opening Monday. Although eating al fresco has been fun it will be wonderful to begin breaking bread together in our gorgeous, new dining space.

We are excited to announce the arrival of our new furniture for The Bistro, Conference Room and Library.

Reminder: Our students have been invited to St. John's Prep's first dance of the school year tonight. All our students need to bring is a school ID or a current class schedule and $10 for admission. The dance is 7-10 pm this evening.

As always it is a pleasure to provide you with the latest APH news.
I hope you all enjoy your weekend.

Warm regards,

Julie Calzini
