Jardon School Adult Transition at its finest

April 9, 2021

Dear Jardon Community,

I hope that everyone had a relaxing Spring Break and enjoyed a week at home with remote learning. On Monday, April 12th, Jardon students will return to school. With only nine weeks of school left for the 20-21 school year, we will be starting our third and final worksite rotation. Some of our students will be completing their last rotation while preparing to graduate from Jardon School! We are unsure of what is to come in the next month as far as end of the year activities and ceremonies. Please be rest assured that we will keep you up-to-date on any new and upcoming information as we get it.

Moving forward, we will continue maintain safety precautions in the school setting by masking up, maintaining 6ft of social distancing, and practicing good hand washing and hygiene habits. We are ready for business with extra masks, plenty of hand sanitizer, and scheduled hygiene breaks. Our classroom surfaces are cleaned between student use and each night custodians are here to keep our building clean as well as sanitized.

Moving forward, students and families may choose to either return to face-to-face instruction or continue with remote instruction. If a student/family has chosen to stay remote, they may contact the homeroom teacher when/if they would like to return to in-person instruction. At Jardon, our goal is to provide our students with the very best education out there! We realize that things in our state are changing daily, for this reason we are allowing families to choose a return date that best suits their circumstances.

Workbox lending library!

We have begun to roll out our workbox lending library this week. Each student can receive two workboxes each week to support work-based curriculum and ULS curriculum at home. We are so excited to offer this exciting experience for our students!

You will notice that the boxes have been sealed with blue tape, this indicates that they have been completely sanitized for your safety. Each box contains printed directions and supplies for students to replicate what they would work on if they were attending school face-to-face. Examples of workboxes include: card making, wrapping silverware, sorting money, salt and pepper fill station, assembling nuts, washers and screws, envelope preparation, office sorting and folding clothes. Our goal is that your student will spend a little time each day practicing these skills with the provided workboxes as well as utilizing the practice activity sheets for home activities (making bed, doing laundry, washing dishes, etc...)each day.

The workbox library will be brought directly to your home for a porch drop off each Friday. Please leave your workboxes on the porch with all of the supplies included so that two new boxes can be dropped off.

Special Olympics: Bocce ball

"Jardon Students- if you are interested in learning how to play Bocce Ball, please check your school email for a message from Ms. R. She will be gathering small groups of students each Tuesday and Thursday during caseload time to learn the basics of Bocce Ball and have games (following protocols to keep everyone safe and healthy). You will just need to reply back to her email if you haven't already and she will put you on the list."nanette.renkiewicz@hazelparkschools.org

Jardon Greenhouse

The Jardon Greenhouse team is working on building a Free Little Library. Our Free Little Library, once built, will stand outside of Jardon School. We are dedicating our Free Little Library to celebrating diversity and it will hold books for all ages! We are excited to be a part of our community and do our part in sharing the beautiful fabric that showcases who we are!

Thank you!

Walking Wednesdays

Walking Wednesdays will happen every Wednesday from 1:45-2:15 p.m. All students and staff will walk for 30 uninterrupted minutes (social distancing maintained) in a preset route through the school. We will have a student chosen play list on the school speakers and water bottles available for everyone. Walking Wednesdays will work to encourage physical activity and socialization.

April Kindness Activity

April showers bring May flowers!! This month we will celebrate each other's strongest attributes! All students and staff will receive 1 umbrella and 5 rain drops (more if you would like them) to surprise a student or staff with. This month write ONE word only that describes the person. Our kindness activities are really catching on. I am not sure that we all realize how much it means to our students and staff. Students are reading their messages and counting their notes on a daily basis!

Meditation with Ms. McCuiston

Hello, Jardon Families!

Hello, Jardon Families!

In the uncertain times that we find ourselves in, it is human nature to feel anxiety, worry, and fear. Practicing meditation on a regular basis can improve our capacity to respond to uncertainty and change in a more balanced way. A consistent meditation practice can help transform our fearful reactions to uncertainty - anxiety, excessive worry, and dread – and increase our capacity to manage the uncertainty of life with greater ease. Creating a state of mindfulness and inclining your mind to pause before letting it spin out of control is a natural extension of meditation. Practicing meditation for just a few minutes every day can make a difference. Pausing to meditate when you feel the fear, stress, and worry building inside can make a difference too. Feel free to give it a try, whether you’re having a happy go lucky day or find yourself in fear. If you have any questions about mindfulness meditation, please feel free to contact me at jennifer.mccuiston@hazelparkschools.org

Sincerely,

Jennifer McCuiston (Your Devoted Jardon Occupational Therapist)

Obtaining a State ID

As an adult it is important to have a legal identification card. Since many of Jardon’s young adults do not have a license, it is important for them to have a State Identification card. These cards look very similar to a license and are considered legal identification. In addition, in order to open a case with MRS (Michigan Rehabilitation Services) a State ID is required.

To obtain a State Identification card in Michigan, one must make an appointment at the Secretary of State office. An Individual must bring his/her birth certificate, one’s Social Security card, and legal proof of residence such as a utility bill. If the individual does not have a bill in his/her name, he may bring a bill from where he lives. I would also suggest the guardian bring the guardianship papers for the individual. The cost for the card is ten dollars.

Generally, by the time an individual turns the age of 18, a State Identification card is recommended. Many of our young adults may have done this while in high school. If your young adult has not obtained a State Identification card, it is highly recommended he/she get one.

HAPPY SPRING!!!!

The first day of spring is called The Vernal Equinox. Vernal is Latin for spring and Equinox is Latin for equal days.At this time the sun's most direct rays are directly over the equator. This means nearly equal day and night all over the world.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the March Equinox is called the Vernal/ Spring Equinox, while the September equinox is called the Autumnal/Fall Equinox. In the southern Hemisphere the opposite is true.

In spring we can expect milder temps and more daylight. One of my favorite things to look forward to, is the birds returning! I love to hear the birds chirping outside. You may see the birds busy making nests as well as other animals preparing for their babies to arrive. With the warmer temps we may find ourselves outside more, especially after being locked up indoors after a long winter.

In the spring we don't have to worry about the extreme heat and humidity that we typically find in the summertime. Another highlight of spring is the LEAVES come back and of course beautiful SPRING FLOWERS! All these plants have an amazing effect on drawing large amounts of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. As a result doing a tremendous service for us!

We can say good-bye to dry air during the winter months that causes dry skin, nose bleeds, irritated sinuses and greater risk of getting sick. Since the mucus in your nose is designed to trap viruses, when it dries up, you are more likely to catch something nasty like colds and the flu.As the weather warms up and becomes more humid, that mucus comes back. You also don't need as much lotion. But you may still need tissues if you have spring allergies unfortunately.

Open your windows and clear out all those indoor pollutants from your home that have been accumulating all winter. Enjoy getting your Vitamin D naturally from the sun. Only 10 minutes outside with about a quarter of your body exposed to the spring sunshine can get you an adequate dose of Vitamin D!
