ARRABRI LODGE CAMP Many thanks to the Grade 3 team for planning and implementing an excellent Grade 3 camp at Arrabri Lodge in Warburton East. Always a large logistical exercise, it was nevertheless handled with aplomb and the students enjoyed a range of fun activities including orienteering, the Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Rock Wall climbing, bush dancing, min-golf and more. I was fortunate enough to attend on Tuesday, and witnessed lots of enthusiasm and fun to be had. My grateful thanks to the team for making this camp such a success.

PARENT OPINION SURVEY A continued and courteous reminder to those who have been chosen at random to complete this year’s parent opinion survey that we would love all responses completed online by this Sunday, August 11. Thank you.

PUPIL FREE DAY A reminder that Friday, August 23 will be a pupil free day, approved by School Council. All day care will be available through OSHClub if required.

PRINCIPALS’ DAY Many thanks on behalf of Patrick Walsh, Gill Nicholls and myself for the many well-wishes and kind thoughts expressed to us last Friday for Principals’ Day. Whilst the job is always ‘worth’ it, it did make us feel pretty special and that our efforts are appreciated! Loved reading the many cards and messages from our students, in particular!

100 DAYS AT SCHOOL PARTY This special milestone was celebrated by our Foundation students yesterday. Here’s the evidence!!

PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY A 12 year tradition was continued on Monday when our School Captains played ‘Principal For A Day’. Here’s their account of events!!

SCHOOL COUNCIL The August meeting of School Council is scheduled for next Thursday, August 15 from 7pm in the staffroom.

That’s all for this week. I hope you have a ‘warm’ weekend.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

FOUNDATION 100 DAYS AT SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS It was wonderful to see and feel the excitement in the Foundation area on Wednesday as the students celebrated their 100 days at school with a range of activities and a lunch time party. Congratulations to all the Foundation students and I hope their excitement remains as they continue with their schooling. Thank you to our amazing Foundation teaching team and our families for helping to celebrate this important milestone.

PRINCIPALS’ DAY THANK YOU Thank you so much to the Viewbank community for all the messages of support and appreciation received for Principals’ Day. It is an absolute pleasure to work alongside Bill and Patrick in leading Viewbank Primary School.

ASSISTING YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING Research shows that families are the most significant influence on their children’s learning, development, health, safety and wellbeing. Families play a key role in helping each child succeed at school. Through everyday activities at home families can help children to develop solid literacy and numeracy skills

Over the next few weeks, I will share recommendations for developing your child’s literacy skills at home, focusing on speaking and listening, reading and writing.

Children who start school with greater literacy skills perform better in school, and not just in language-based subjects like English.

Helping Your Child to Speak and Listen: Birth to Year 2

Talking with your child Talk as much as you can with your child and engage them in conversation often. The more you speak and engage with them, the faster they will learn new vocabulary and speak with greater fluency. Oral language skills are an important predictor of reading and writing skills, so the better your child can speak, the better their overall literacy skills will develop.

Regularly talking and interacting with your child extends their language and listening skills and helps grow their confidence with language.

Include your child when discussing everyday activities such as grocery shopping, gardening, cooking dinner, collecting mail from the mailbox, doing housework, and travelling in the car or bus.

Outings can also provide a world of new vocabulary. Discussion during outings can enrich your child’s understanding of the world. Outings might include going to the park, the zoo, a shopping centre, museums, libraries and art galleries.

Other fun activities can include:

  • Share rhymes, poems and songs. Encourage your child to join in.
  • Share and talk about family histories and family photos.
  • Look at picture books or art books. Ask your child to describe what is happening in the pictures and make up stories together.
  • Collect cardboard and other household items for your child to build with. Ask your child to describe what they are building.
  • Look at ‘junk mail’ and talk about the things for sale.
  • Listen to simple radio programs or podcasts together and discuss the content.
  • Play vocabulary games with your child such as, “what’s the opposite of ….?” (for example, “what’s the opposite of big?”) and “what’s another word for….?” (for example, “what’s another word for angry?”).

Oral storytelling Storytelling is a great way to extend your child’s speaking and listening skills, and to expand their memory and imagination. Either you can tell the story, or you can encourage your child to tell the story.

Storytelling might be about:

  • your child’s favourite toy
  • another family member
  • a pet
  • a favourite fictional character from a book or television program
  • a famous person
  • the work of people from different professions, such as astronauts, firefighters, nurses and teachers
  • an imaginary world with imaginary characters
  • an imaginary animal that can speak.

Here are some tips to start your storytelling:

  • Make it exciting, with different voices, puppets, or a finger play.
  • Have a dress-up box for your child to use for storytelling and imaginative play.
  • Start with what interests your child.
  • Start by creating a character and a setting.

And remember, literacy in your child’s early years can always be fun. Excursions and playtime are great activities in which to engage and talk with your child. Fun activities are also the best opportunities to teach your child new vocabulary and new ways of saying things.

Helping Your Child to Speak and Listen: Year 3 – Year 6

These years are a time when your child will learn more about the world. Engaging them in discussions improves their speaking skills, and helps them understand the world and their place in it.

Talking to your child As your child moves through primary school, they will speak with greater fluency and with a greater knowledge of the world.

Some tips to foster more fluent speaking include:

  • Continue to involve your child when discussing everyday activities, such as grocery shopping, gardening, cooking dinner, collecting mail from the mailbox, doing house work, and travelling in the car or bus.
  • Try to ask your child specific questions about their day. A general question like “how was your day?” will likely get a single-word response of “good.” Ask specific questions like “what is the book you are reading in class about?” or “what did you do at lunchtime today?”
  • Involve your child in your discussions about the day’s events or current events. Ask their opinion. This helps them understand different perspectives and increases their vocabulary.
  • Show a genuine interest in your child’s reading, writing and viewing of all types of texts. Talking about texts can create meaningful discussions and help your child see them as important.
  • Show interest in topics your child is studying at school. These can be a great springboard into discussions.
  • Encourage your child to discuss their everyday problems and feelings.
  • Use questions and discussion to explore other people’s feelings. This will help your child to develop empathy for others.
  • Use questions and discussion to broaden your child’s experience and knowledge of the world, particularly during new experiences or on outings.

Discussing news and current events As your child gets older, they become more aware of news and current events. Discussing news and current events can enrich your child’s understanding of the world.

Questions are an effective way to encourage your child to think critically about an event and can help foster empathy. Questions also help your child to develop oral fluency when discussing social issues.

Questions you might ask when discussing a news story or current event include:

  • What do you think caused the event?
  • How do you think people will be affected?
  • Is it fair?
  • Why do you think people think that/do that?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • How could the problem be fixed?

Some other activities to develop your discussion:

  • Read several articles together on the same issue to get different opinions. Then discuss the different opinions.
  • Have a debate on a topic, with you and your child taking different sides of the issue.
  • Download and listen to podcasts on an issue, and discuss.
  • Discuss different “What if?” scenarios. This will help develop your child’s problem solving and imagination.

Have a great week.

Mrs Nicholls

Principal Day I would like to thank the staff, students and families for making my first Principal Day at Viewbank Primary a special one. I am thoroughly enjoying working closely with Bill and Gill as we face the ups and downs throughout the days and weeks.

The Resilience Project Viewbank Primary School was fortunate to have Martin Heppell of The Resilience Project deliver two highly engaging sessions to our students today.

The first session at 9:45 was delivered to our Foundation to Grade 2 students, and the second session was at 11:30 and was for our Grade 3 to Grade 6 students.

Martin is a highly engaging speaker and it was fascinating to hear a bit of his life story – including spending a fair bit of time growing up in South East Asia – but your children can fill you in on that story!

In 2019, Viewbank Primary School is participating in the Partnership Program and in 2020, we will be participating in the Immersion Program.

Our next ‘The Resilience Project’ date is Monday the 2nd September. This is going to be the free parent session, and is one not to miss. To ensure we cater for everyone, there will be a TryBooking link sent out. Due to the amount of initial enquiries, we will be having this session in the Gym.

The Resilience Project now has an app and you can download the iOS and Android version from here: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/the-resilience-project-app/

School Values Update As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are currently revisiting our School Values. Our School Wide Positive Behaviour team culled a list of 100 values to 17 and the staff had an opportunity to vote for their top 6. The list of 17 is now down to 9 and, in the coming weeks, the students will be voting on these. The results of the staff and student surveys will be made available, as well as an opportunity for our parent community to vote.

Dear Parents,

In order to keep our students safe whilst on line, we will be attaching some resources for your information. We encourage you to discuss these with your children - particularly the grade 5 and 6 students who have their own iPads. We have obtained the Information sheets from The Carly Ryan Foundation. The Carly Ryan Foundation is a certified online safety program provider under the Office of the eSafety Commissioner and delivers online safety and healthy relationship seminars to students and parents. The organisation also provides a range of services and support in the areas of internet safety and crime, cyberbullying, connection to resources and counselling and contributing to law and policy reform.

The Carly Ryan Foundation have very generously allowed us to use their Information sheets on a variety of apps that our students may or may not be aware of. The information sheets point out the concerns/challenges surrounding each app and give information on how to set up each app so that our student’s information is completely private. Of course if you are concerned about any app your child is using - DELETE! We will attach a couple of information sheets each week for your information. We are organising for The Carly Ryan Foundation to present to our grade 5 and 6 students and parents in 2020 so keep watching for more information on this.
