Americanism Essay Contest

Description: FRA sponsors an annual essay contest to promote the spirit of Americanism and patriotism among our country’s youth. FRA's Americanism Essay Contest is open to all students, grades 7 through 12, including those who are home schooled. Students are invited to submit a 350-word essay (What Freedom of Speech Means to Me) through an FRA member or local FRA branch before the December 1st deadline. Local winners are forwarded for competition at the regional level and regional winners compete for national prizes.

Scholastic Art and Writing Award

Sponsor: Alliance for Young Artists and Writers

Amount: Multiple amounts

Deadline: December 1, 2018

Description: The Scholastic Awards look for work that demonstrates originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision. Young artists and writers are free to explore any and all topics. There are no pre-defined prompts and no work is ever disqualified from the Scholastic Awards because of the nature of its content. Public, private, or home-school students in the U.S., Canada, or American schools in the rest of the world enrolled in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate in the Scholastic Awards.

Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships

Sponsor: Sodexo Foundation

Amount: $5,000 (5 awards given)

Deadline: December 5, 2018

Description: Must have demonstrated on-going commitment to his/her community by performing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States within the last 12 months or longer. Volunteer services must help non-family members. Must be between the ages of 5 and 25. Must be enrolled in an accredited educational institution (kindergarten through graduate school) in the United States.

Innovation in Education Scholarship

Sponsor: LA Tutors 123

Amount: $500

Deadline: December 20, 2018

Description: Must be currently enrolled in high school or college. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Must have designed an innovative project that makes a difference in the lives of others (This could be a website, series of blogs, an app, fundraising event, etc.)

The National WWII Museum Annual Student Essay Contest

Sponsor: The National World War II Museum

Amount: 1st place $1,000; 2nd place $750; and 3rd place $500.

Deadline: December 28, 2018

Description: Hope humbly said “I was offering time and laughs — the men and women fighting the war were offering up their lives. They taught me what sacrifice was all about.” Please consider the above quote from Bob Hope from your point of view as a young person coming of age in the twenty-first century. What do you think the role of artists, entertainers or celebrities – both at home and abroad – should be during times of conflict? Do artists, entertainers and celebrities have an obligation to use their platform and audience reach to support the men and women “offering up their lives?”

SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship

Sponsor: School Band and Orchestra Magazine

Amount: $1,000 (5 scholarships given in grades 4-8 and 5 scholarships given in grades 9-12)

Description: Answer this essay question (in 250 words or less): What role has your music program played in bringing you closer to your school mates, friends and the community at large? Must be a student in grades four through twelve at any public or private school.

Customized Girl Scholarship

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Description: Must be a high school, undergraduate, or graduate student at the time of application. To be considered for this award, applicants must first follow the @customizedgirl account on Twitter and then submit a statement, as a tweet, in response to the topic posted on the application site. In addition, students may include the tag #statement4theworld and share her tweet to maximize exposure and odds of selection. When the statement has been submitted, applicants must also complete an online application form. Statements and applications must be received no later than the deadline.

Apprentice Ecologist Initiative Scholarship

Sponsor: Nicodemus Wilderness Project

Amount: $850

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Description: In order to apply for this scholarship, students must complete an environmental project. Students have three options for the project: trash cleanup; planting native trees; or a free-form project (possible projects include starting a recycling program, taking action to protect an area for wildlife, campaigning to save a species or natural area, educating others about wildlife or conservation issues, taking steps to prevent pollution/contamination, or improving awareness about the importance of renewable energy sources). Students must take high-resolution digital pictures of the project while in progress and at completion. After completing the project, the student must write an essay about the project. There is no word limit on the essay. Must be 13 to 21 years of age.

Unigo Top Ten List Scholarship

Amount: $1,500

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Description: Create a Top Ten List of the top ten reasons you should get this scholarship. The written response must be in English, with correct spelling and grammar, and must not exceed 250 words. Must be 13 years of age or older at time of application.
