RHS It's Your Neighbourhood Creating a brighter Leadgate

RHS - It's Your Neighbourhood

Throughout 2018 Leadgate Task Force has been busy utilising our Green spaces and planting Fruit Trees, Bushes, Planters and Hanging Baskets all around the Village as part of the RHS - It's Your Neighbourhood Scheme.

Phase 1 Fruit Trees

Our first planting started on the 15th January with the initial planting of 3 Fruit Trees along with Growing Durham and assisted by Gibside NT Green Academies Project which involved students from Derwentside College .

Sadly after consultation it was agreed that the trees needed to be moved, they were repositioned alongside the C2C again with the assistance of Gibside NT Green Academies Project. The trees are still doing well and we hope will become a source of free fruit for the people of Leadgate.

Phase 2 Bushes

On Sunday‎, ‎15‎ ‎April‎ ‎2018, thanks to the kind donation of 50 bush plants from the Woodland Trust we were able, with the help of our willing volunteers to plant up some green spaces in the village.

Phase 3 - Planters and Hanging Baskets

By the start of the Summer 2018 the Task Force was in a position to start to place planters around the Village. Most were built by our members but also included a 3 Tier Planter which was funded by a grant from Durham County Council Civic Pride Department. The plants and compost required were funded by a grant from Derwent Valley Partnership (AAP).

The next task was hanging baskets. Procuring the baskets, sourcing the plants ,planting them up with the assistance of Gibside NT Green Academies Project and Learning for Life, the planting session was "run" by Ronnie Allaker. Thanks to Ian Bone and his crew, Janet & David Lavery it was time to put up the brackets and get the baskets in place.

Ongoing Work

This was a large project which involved a lot of work by the members of the Task Force. It was not all plain sailing but the end result was appreciated by the Village and a visit from the RHS Assessor was extremely positive. We continue to look after all the planting, watering and weeding and other maintenance. We are always grateful for any help, if you feel that you could assist, please get in touch with us using the link below

Winter Bulb Planting Event

Bub Planting Session

There is plenty of ongoing tasks involved with this project and the next "Work Day" is on the 20th October 2018 when we will be holding a Winter Bulb Planting Event. We will meet at Leadgate Co-Op at 10 am. All are welcome to come along and lend a hand.
