Take the Discovery Bags Outdoors

OUTDOOR ACTIVITiES

Wildlife Trail

Plan a Wildlife Trail in your local park or nature reserve. Take the Discovery Bags for some or all of the animals, with you. Stop in different habitats to open up and explore the bag for the animal which lives there. (The cards describe suitable places.) How much more fun to learn about our wonderful birds, mammals or minibeasts, when you are standing in their habitat; you might even see one!

Maps

Draw a map with the children, planning where you will go and choosing appropriate places for the animals. The children can rediscover the route at the weekend with their family or friends and show them who lives where!

Think about which habitats suit each animal.

Discover which animals live in your Local Habitats!

  • Stop beside a nettle patch to explore the bag for the Ladybird or Peacock butterfly. Can you see any caterpillars?
  • Look in the shed while you talk about the Garden spider or House mouse. Are there any droppings or spider webs?
  • Stop in the wood to open up Discovery Bags for the Blue tit, Tawny owl, Squirrel or Woodpecker. Can you spot a woodpecker hole or see some chewed up chestnuts?
  • Admire a patch of wild flowers, while you open up the Honey bee bag. Can you hear a bee?
  • Investigate a hole in the ground and discuss the Badger, Rabbit or Fox. Is anyone at home?
  • Pause by a log pile, to learn about the Stag beetle. What can you see?
  • Gaze up to the skies and find out about the Peregrine. Is there one above you?
Start to see familiar places as homes for the animals!

Be a Scientist!

Older children can bring along pencils and clipboards and fill in the Recording sheets with the data for each animal, like real scientists.

If you are studying Habitats, Food Webs or Life Cycles, bring the subject to life by taking the children on a walk and discussing the relevant cards for each animal, in their habitat. Talk about Food Webs looking at all the Diet cards; look around and see what suitable food you can spot, for the animals to eat. Where would you build a nest if you were a Robin? Where will the Peacock butterfly lay her eggs?

So many activities to do indoors!

Indoor Activities

Wildlife Trail

Create a Wildlife Trail in the classroom or hall, setting up the different animals and their cards, at stages around the room. Send the children off to collect the data for each animal, on the Recording Sheets.

Research in Groups

Divide the children into groups and give each group, one animal to work on. Have a feedback session to compare what you have learned.

Curriculum Work

  • Create bar charts for the animals' size, lifespan, droppings (!) or number of young.
  • Try some of the worksheets on Diets, Habitats and Life Cycles.
  • IT. Investigate more about these, or similar animals, online. Suitable websites are suggested.
  • Have a quiz to test each other and see how much you have learned.

Craft Activities

  • Create model eggs and nests for the different birds, an egg sac for the Garden spider or a beehive for the Honey bee.
  • Model some droppings for the mammals, getting the size and shape right!
  • Create animal booklets, writing and colouring in the templates on the USB.
  • Make food plates for each of the animals, drawing the right sort of food onto the printable plates provided, on the USB.
  • Design a stunning classroom display using the photos supplied on the USB, (all the animal photos from the cards are on the USB!), your model nests and eggs, model droppings, soft toys and plates of food.

Fun!

  • Party! Have a bird, mammal or minibeast party, playing the suggested party games and making food to match the theme.
  • Music! Learn to recognise different bird songs or identify the mammal tracks.
  • Challenges! Try some of the word searches on the USB, based on these animals and their lives.
