The Union and Confederate armies had a battle at Manassas, Virginia during August 28-30, 1862 due to the fact that each side wanted different things for the United States, either slavery or no slavery.

The Second Battle of Bull Run proved to be the deciding battle in the Civil War campaign waged between the Union and Confederate armies in northern Virginia. The union force commanded by John Pope waited for George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac in the expectation of a combined offense. Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to strike first, sending half of his army of Northern Virginia to attack the Federal supply base. Stonewall Jackson (hero of the war) seized supplies and burned the depot, then established positions in the woods thirteen months earlier. On August 29, John Popes federals brawled with Jackson's men, who held there ground with great losses on each side. The next day when the rest of General Robert E. Lee's army arrived, there were 28,000 rebels led by James Longstreet and they launched a counterattack, forcing Pope to withdraw his battered army toward Washington that night.

The Second Battle of Bull Run holds a great significance in the history of the United States. There was an immense number of casualties on both ends of the war and the outcome was that the confederates won. The Second Battle of Bull Run was a very important victory for the South. In fact, it was the most decisive battle in the Northern Virginia campaign for the Confederates.
