Trancedentalism By: Vanessa Gutierrez

Nonconformity

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

-Walden, Henry David Thoreau

Miley Cyrus was born on November 28, 1992 in Franklin Tennessee. She is an American singer, songwriter and Actress who first became very popular to teens around the world with her TV show on Disney Channel known as Hannah Montana. It was on that show that she had two different personalities. First she was Miley which was her normal life where she could be herself. Then she was also Hannah Montana who was a famous pop star and only a few people knew about her secret. In real life people only saw her as the young person who was gonna be stuck playing Hannah Montana for teenagers and kids to watch. But in 2013 she proved the world wrong by releasing music video known as wrecking ball.

It was in this music video that Miley proved that she is no longer a child and was now an adult. In this video Miley wore little to no clothes and was swinging on a wrecking ball. This video was only the beginning to her trying to show people who she really was. "I'm only 20 years old, I need some freedom to grow up and make mistakes," she said. "And no matter what happens, I promise I'll always be true to Miley Cyrus." She knows what she is doing and she doesn't plan on letting people get to her no matter how much they hate her. She is doing this for herself and she plans to keep doing it because this is the real Miley Cyrus. If transcendentalist were still around then she would be part of them because she won't change just because people want her to.

Favoring Intuition over Reason

“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string”- “Self Reliance”, Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Hunger Games is a trilogy written by an Suzanne Collins. The first book came out in 2008 and has sold over 28 million copies. All three books were made into movies and at the time of the first movies release which was in 2012 it was the third largest movie in America. The book is about 12 districts who are all in poverty send a male and a female to compete in the Hunger Games which is a battle arena to the death. It is hosted by the people who live in Panem who don't have to compete. Katniss Everdeen is the main character who is forced to volunteer into the Hunger Games in order to save her younger sister. The male who is picked is Peeta Mellark who she ends up teaming up with her at the end of the Hunger Games. When they were the last two competitors left they were told only one of them can make it out alive. It was here that Katniss had to make a huge decision.

She could either kill Peeta and just win the competition or come up with another idea. Katniss came up with an idea that could have ended both of their lives. They were both gonna eat nightlock which is a very poisonous berry. "One." Maybe I'm wrong. "Two." Maybe they don't care if we both die. "Three!" It's too late to change my mind. I lift my hand to m mouth, taking one last look at the world. The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare." The host of the Hunger Games stopped them right before they ate the berries and allowed them to live. Katniss didn't even think about what she was doing. She was about to kill herself and she didn't even think about her family. Katniss Everdeen would definitely be a transcendentalist, because she trusted her gut feeling over reason.

Importance of Nature

“In the woods we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life- no disgrace, no calamity…”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Bear Grylls was born on June 7, 1974. He has written a few books, but he is mainly known for his television show known as Man vs. Wild. Its a show where he goes out in the wilderness and shows people how to survive in case they ever get stuck in that situation. He worked on the show between the 2006 and 2011. He has survived in many different environments like the desert, snowy areas, jungles, swamps, etc. In 2014 he started another show called Running Wild With Bear Grylls. This show is about him going out in the wild with celebrities where he makes them do crazy stuff that they normally wouldn't do.

Bear Grylls loves being surrounded by nature because that is where he find truth and inspiration. “As a young boy, scouting gave me a confidence and camaraderie that is hard to find in modern life.” Bear Grylls would rather be in nature rather than live in a city where its just crowded full of people and technology. Going out in the wild is really the only way to escape both of those things .Transcendentalist would love Bear Grylls, because of how much he loves nature and how he knows what nature can do to make your life better.

Self-Reliance

“What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule...is harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it.” - Self-Reliance

Steve Jobs was born non February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. He was an inventor, businessman and industrial designer. He is mainly known for being co-founder and CEO of Apple. The company started to get really popular in 1777 when they made Apple II which was a computer. Steve Jobs was forced to leave Apple in 1885 but was hired again in 1997 as CEO. He managed to save the company from bankruptcy . With Jobs help the company managed to increase sells when the iMac came out. The success they got allowed the company to branch out and improve other digital appliances. Overall Steve Jobs was a very successful man, but he was not everything was perfect for him. He has gotten in fights with other companies and that only leads to bad publicity. He was even faced with criminal charges and civil penalties that he was unaware of doing. But he did not let any of this get in his way. He managed to make Apple into the most valuable company in 2011.

Steve Jobs was a man who didn't give up. He always kept striving to make Apple better and make people love the technology that was made. "Sometimes life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith." Even through all the ups and downs Steve Jobs has managed to make Apple into one of the most successful companies in the world and without him people probably wouldn't have the smartphones they have today. Steve Jobs would be loved by Transcendentalists because he never gave up on his dreams.

Simplified Life

“Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.”

- Walden, Henry David Thoreau

In the movie the Lion King 1 1/2 Timon and Pubmaa find their dream home. They live at a waterfall by themselves with only the simple things they need to survive. They only eat bugs for and they sleep on a little nest they made. They have nothing to worry about anymore because they left their homes to have fun and do what they want. They made a song called Hakuna Matata which means no worries. All they do is relax and eat any bug they can find. There lives are very simple and that is just how they want it. All they need is each other to be happy until Simba comes into their lives but they teach him what they know. So know they have an extra person to talk to and enjoy what life gives them.

Even though they do have a few competitions to see who is better, they still have a simple life. "Three pals and no worries, what more could you want?" They literally have nothing to worry about. They could just have fun and live their lives without someone telling them what they can and cannot do. Timon and Pumbaa are the definition of a simplified life. Transcendentalists would love how simple these two made their lives.
