Taking a boat trip in Matsushima Bay is on the "must do" list here. Very pretty, although there were still a few buildings along the seafront which were still being repaired after the 2011 tsunami struck.
The Zen buddhist temples here began in 828 AD, at a time when Matsushima Bay was on the frontier of Japan, and its beauty was thought to be close to paradise.
In 1646 the Zuuganji temple was rebuilt by Samurai ruler Date Masamune.
