Avi's parents are divorced because they were always fighting. He is relieved because the fighting has stopped. He now lives with his mom and sister. Avi's parent made an agreement with each other. The agreement was that his mom would take care of him and his little sister and his dad would send support checks every week. His dad quickly forgot about the support checks, which made his mom struggle to put food on the table and pay the bills. Avi's dad called him a few days before his thirteenth birthday to ask him what he wants within reason. Avi asks for a dinner with his mom and dad. His dad says he will do it if his mom agrees. His mom agrees and Avi starts planning ways to embarrass them. He has a lot of negative feelings about the divorce and all of their fights. They go to a Chinese restaurant and Avi picks a table in the middle of the room, so everyone in the restaurant will be able to see him embarrass his parents. He begins the conversation by saying mean things about his dad's girlfriend and then asks him about the support checks. His mother scolds him but he just continues talking. Then, he starts making fun of his mother for dating a rich guy. It went on like this until his mother, crying excused herself to go to the bathroom and then his farther paid the restaurant and left.
Life can be hard and sometimes you need to show your feelings even if their negative.
