School visit in Ontario Day 2-4 at Monsignor John Pereyma Css

Monday - wednesday a group of NORCAN participants were visiting Pereyma in Oshawa. The program for these days gave us the opportunity to get to know eachother and the school better. Scavenger hunting/an Amazing race started us off - around the school facilities.

Trying out the Sphero robots - and programming. Fun for adults and the kids!

The second day all participants was working on STEAM tasks, solving different scientific assignements in groups. This gave us the opportunity to see applied mathematics. It was wonderful to see the kids working together across ages and nationalities.

Rocket science isn't math - or is it?
Observation from the classrooms; technology can be used in many different ways...measuring, documenting, estimating...doing math!

The third daym students got to follow a Pereyma student through a regular school day, while the teachers planned and carried out a maths class together. This gave us new perspectives on how to start off on a new topic through open, relevant and real world problemsolving. Inquiry based learning is worth digging in to. Another central question that came to mind was: How can we establish a growth mindset in the classroom? How are we asking questions and replying the students?

Observations from the classrooms: School uniforms, catholic traditions and canadian culture were new experiences for the norwegian participants.
Team teaching and learning together
Observations from the classrooms: Students and teachers use a lot of technology during the lessons...but they don't seem that distracted by it.

Thank you Pereyma for the great welcome and hospitality, for your open doors, for all the learning, for introducing timbits and all the Tim Hortons :-) Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
