Future Personalized Pathways

Beginning in fall 2017, groups of about 120 freshmen in each of our four comprehensive high schools will enter the district’s first Personalized Pathway.

Their experience throughout their four years will be a combination of what is working best in Madison schools – close-knit communities, academic goal-setting, learning through and reflecting on real-world experiences, hands-on projects, interdisciplinary lessons and exploring options for schools, college majors and life beyond graduation in a systematic way.

Students will learn in a way that connects their coursework around a broad theme. In our first Personalized Pathway, the theme is Health Services.

Within Health Services, each high school has a more focused theme:

Health Care Leaders Academy: Making a difference in the health and wellness of our community
Health Equity for Social Justice Community: Inspiring change for a healthier community
Public Health Academy for Social Justice: Inspiring change for a healthier community
Health and Wellness
As freshmen, students will take a one-semester Health Services class and the usual four core classes – English, social studies, science and math. The central theme of Health Services will be woven throughout.
We believe Personalized Pathways will help ensure that more students graduate from high school and will better prepare all students for a successful future.

In the coming years, Personalized Pathways will expand. We plan to add anywhere from 4 to 6 pathways. To best plan for the future, we need your voice. Specifically, we’d like your input on 5 future Pathway options that we have identified. They are:

These options are based on:

  • student interest
  • how ready our staff is and whether we have other resources available, like equipment and technology
  • whether there are ample opportunities in Madison for students to get exposure to these areas
  • how well community partners can support these areas
  • whether there are viable college and university offerings in these fields
