Avondale Newsletter 10th January 2020

Happy New Year

A very Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to school. I hope that you all enjoyed the holidays and are looking forward to the year ahead. The children have all settled back into their school routines very quickly and have been very well behaved. I look forward to your continued support throughout 2020 and hope that we can all look forward to a very happy and healthy year working together.

The winter season is upon us and I hope that I will not have to close the school due to snow or other adverse weather conditions. A decision to close the school is not undertaken lightly and I will only close the school for health and safety reasons. It is an extremely difficult decision and I have to take into consideration a number of things including how safe it is for pupils and staff to travel to and from school safely. I also need to ensure that I have enough staff on site to teach and supervise pupils for the full day. Many staff do not live locally and travel a distance to school each day so they are not able to walk to work. A decision to delay the start of the school day may also be taken to ensure we have enough staff in school. I will endeavour to make a decision regarding any closure by 7.30am in the morning and will post a message on the school website and we will text parents. If I am closing the school I will also contact local radio stations to ask them to announce any closure - please do not ring school.

If the school is open, but as a parent you are unable to get your child to school due to the conditions on the roads or public transport is cancelled you must use your judgement as to whether to send your child to school on that day.

Many of you will know Mr O'Dea, our Site Supervisor, as he has worked here at school for over 30 years. I wanted to let you know that he is unwell at the moment and will not be in school for quite a period of time. I am sure you will join us in wishing him a full recovery and getting him back here to Avondale as soon as he can.

Mrs Brown, Headteacher

Well done to our stars of the week

Pupil Well Being

There will be a Parents' Group meeting on Tuesday 21 January at 9.00 am. If you want to discuss any issues and/or want some ideas and tips of how to deal with things, please feel free to join us. Coffee & biscuits available and all parents are welcome.

Winter Weather

We’ve had a few children in school this week without coats. Please ensure your child comes to school appropriately dressed. If the weather is fine (or even drizzly), children will go out on the playground at break and lunch so they need their coats.

Primary School Applications

Please note that the deadline for applications is 15 January 2020. The application information can be found on our website or click the web address below to apply.

I know we are all busy in a morning and have a million things to do and need to get off to do those things as soon as we’ve dropped off our child/ren. Please can we all be mindful of where we park and how we can be courteous drivers. Unfortunately there have been a couple of occasions this week where inappropriate language has been exchanged between adults. Can we please be mindful of where we are and that there are often children around. As adults we should set the example to our children.

Letters have come home this week outlining the full range of clubs available this term. If you want your child to have a place in any of these clubs, please complete the form and return to school as soon as possible.

A big thank you to all the staff that are running these clubs in their own time.

If your child is due to attend either the Robinwood or London trip this year, please note that final payment deadline is 31 January. Please log in to your School Money account to make a payment, if you haven't already done so.

School Shoes

Please note that all children should wear plain black shoes for school; black trainers are NOT part of our uniform policy.

Lost Property

The lost property container is overflowing again – if you are missing an item (or items) can you please come in after school and take a look. Any unclaimed items will be disposed of on Friday 17 January 2020.
