Spotlight on Alumni
This past term, the campus was quieter and most classes were held online but EMU Dietetics and Human Nutrition alumnus, Nick Pomante, MS RDN (EMU Dietetics Class of 2015) worked on developing new ways to engage students in this virtual environment. As the EMU Wellness Coordinator, Nick developed a new way to incentivize student engagement in health and wellness related activities using the Engage EMU app. Using the app, students can see events and programs happening in person and online. Students are able to earn points for engaging with the various programs, events and services and redeem these points within the app for prizes such as EMU swag or free tuition credits. Nick says “Using a point system not only incentivizes engagement but allows the University to place emphasis on programs that address prevalent needs within our student population.” Here's the link to the full article: https://today.emich.edu/story/story/11536
Nick recently also was awarded Outstanding New Professional Michigan 2020 from the National Association of Student Affairs Professional Organization. Congratulations, Nick!
Spotlight on Alumni
Our Student Dietetic Association (SDA) leaders, despite the pandemic, have been able to continue to arrange insightful and motivational speakers this academic year. We are grateful that Alisha Lorincz, RDN, EMU Dietetics Program alumna, agreed to speak virtually to the SDA on 10.16.2020.
Alisha graduated in 2014 and is currently a functional/thyroid nutrition RDN specialist . Now located in Roanoake, Virginia. her website is https://lishaloveslife.com/ and her Instagram account is Lisha_loveslife.
Alisha discussed using The Leveraged Practice, and provided insights about having dietitians as mentors. She gave our students valuable information about waivers and disclaimers for licensure, along with the creation of super-bills. Alisha attested to her use of an online platform to provide clients with classes, called teachable.com. She discussed how this platform is self-paced, and mentioned that through live question and answer sessions once a week she builds rapport with her audience. Overall, this was a rich presentation, with opportunity for virtual interaction and questions at its closure, by our Program students.
Spotlight on Eagle Nutrition Services and EMU Dietetics Program Students
With the need to create virtual content during the pandemic, Dietetics students became adept at creating video content. Under the direction of Darlene Bellers, MS, RDN and Ramona Bertrand, RDN, students recorded and edited numerous videos that you may view here: Eagle Nutrition Services YouTube ~ please check this out! By subscribing and liking the videos, you can help increase their visibility.
Overall, it's been a challenging term of learning technology and social media, on top of all the usual other skills. We're proud of all our CP students' efforts and completed work!
If you would like to specifically impact EMU Dietetics students with a small donation, please apply a gift to one of these funds: 01287 - Dietetics Expendable Scholarship Fund or 00231 - Food & Nutrition.
