Welcome to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In June, at the all-breed shows, collies came away with two Best in Show awards, 32 Group placements, one Best Owner-handled in Show, and 32 National Owner-handled Series placements.
The Bests in Show were awarded in two states, West Virginia and Alaska and went to rough collie dogs, CH Milas Call Me Maybe and GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT. The judges were William Daugherty with 330 dogs in competition and Darryl Vice with 396, respectively. The Best Owner-handled in Show was awarded to the smooth dog, GCHB Travler's Catching Zzzzz under Judge Anne Bolus in New York.
GCH Glenshire Peaches And Cream was awarded six Group Placements in June, including a Group One under Anthony Kelly at Greater Philadelphia Dog Fanciers Association.
Collies accrued 32 Herding Group placements, including the highest number of Group 1 awards – 13 – for a month through the first six months of the year. The big blue rosette went to the following collies – all roughs: GCH Glenshire Peaches And Cream, GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT, CH Heatherfield Legacy Of Love, GCHB Scalloway's Lion Hunter, CH Milas Call Me Maybe, GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine, and GCH Highcroft St. Germaine Wildfire.
These are the judges who selected a collie as the top herding dog of the day: Anthony Kelly, Janet Fink, Cathy Daugherty, Joseph Gregory, James Frederiksen, Charles Olvis, William Daugherty, Dana Cline, Judi Elford, John Wade, Brian Meyer, and Sulie Greendale-Paveza.
A total of 15 collies recorded placements in June – 12 roughs and 3 smooths. Other placements included seven Group 2s, seven Group 3s, and five Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 32 times compared to 6 for the Smooth Variety.

GCHB Scalloway's Lion Hunter took five group placements during the month, including two Group 1s under Judges Charles Olvis and James Frederiksen.
The largest number of Herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 216. It happened at Lawton Dog Fanciers Association in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 28. The award was a Group 2 and it went to the rough dog, GCHB Scalloway's Lion Hunter (D). The Herding Group judge was Nancy Simmons.
There was just one judge, Joanne (Jan) Paulk that placed both varieties in the same group on the same day. It was at another large group at Lawton Dog Fanciers Association on June 27 with 204 Herding dogs shown during the day. The rough dog, GCHB Scalloway's Lion Hunter, placed third and the smooth bitch, GCHG Wild Wind's Don'T Stop Believing CD RN NAJ, placed fourth.
National Owner-handled Series thrives
Herding Group judges placed collies 32 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The placements included 13 Group 1s, 5 for the Rough Variety and 8 for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 16 placements and the roughs took 16.
CH Heatherfield Legacy Of Love was awarded a Herding Group 1 and a NOHS Group 1 under Joseph Gregory at Northlake Kennel Club of Greater Covington in Gonzales, LA on June 3.
