Alvaro F in Year 8, bid in the recent Secondary House Auction to be the Principal for the day. Part of his job was being on the interview panel for our new Head Students, talking in the Primary Assembly, looking for learning observations in class as well as contributing to this week’s Bulletin. He has written a report on his new role.
Álvaro F., de Year 8, hizo una oferta en nuestra reciente Subasta de Secundaria para ser Director por un día. Parte de su trabajo fue formar parte de un comité entrevistador de nuestros nuevos "Head Students", hablar en la Asamblea de Primaria, hacer observaciones en las que se fijase en el aprendizaje, así como escribir en el boletín de esta semana. Y así ha producido su informe de este nuevo papel:
Álvaro F – a day in the life of a Principal!
I had the opportunity of being the Principal for a day, for me, it is an honour to do this and a great experience. It all started on Friday the 8th November in the house auction where I bid for being the principal for a day. I was really lucky that nobody went over my bid.
He tenido la oportunidad de ser Director por un día; para mí es un honor y una gran experiencia. Todo empezó el Viernes 8 de Noviembre en la Subasta de las Casas, donde hice una oferta para ser Director por un día. Y tuve la suerte de que nadie la superase.
On Friday 15th November, in the morning I had to present a little powerpoint about communication in front of the whole of primary. I was really nervous, I had a lot of feelings, it was really difficult to do and I had to really concentrate. There were a lot of pupils and teachers, I was really amazed. I remember when I was in primary and saw the teacher present the assembly and I always thought that it was quite easy but today I realised it was very difficult to talk in front of so many people.
El Viernes 15 de Noviembre, por la mañana, presenté un breve powerpoint sobre el valor de la comunicación delante de toda Primaria. Estaba muy nervioso, bajo muchas emociones, fue difícil y me tuve que concentrar de verdad. Había muchos alumnos y profesores, estaba sinceramente sorprendido. Recuerdo cuando estaba en Primaria y veía a los profesores presentar las asambleas y siempre pensé que era algo bastante fácil pero hoy me he dado cuenta de lo difícil que es hablar delante de tanta gente.
I had the great opportunity to have a line management meeting with Mr Jackson and ask him some questions and understand what is going on in the school with the houses and how the school is going to raise money for charities. It is really interesting how it is all working and to see how everything is going on track. I have been here in this school since I was three years old and I have never seen the school like this, I am impressed by how well the school is going and improving.
Tuve también la increíble oportunidad de asistir a una reunión de trabajo (de rutina con su superior) con Mr Jackson. Le hice algunas preguntas y traté de entender cómo funciona el sistema de las casas y cómo se va a recaudar dinero para varias ONGs. Es muy interesante de verdad cómo funciona todo y ver cómo se mantienen las cosas en orden. He estado en el colegio desde que tenía 3 años de edad y nunca he visto un sitio como éste, estoy muy impresionado de cómo va y cómo está mejorando el colegio.
Mrs Lee-Allan and I went to a Year 5 class, looking for learning where they were learning about newspapers and I could see how they were getting on. I could see that they knew what they were doing to get better and how they were improving their understanding. I also could see they knew perfectly well what they were doing, they could understand it. I could not see anybody frustrated, everybody was confident when answering the question by the teacher, everyone was participating and enjoying the class. I did not see anyone misbehaving or talking over the teacher.
Fui con Mrs Lee-Allan a una clase de Year 5, para observar el aprendizaje. Estaban aprendiendo sobre periódicos y pude ver cómo lo llevaban. Comprobé que sabían que lo que estaban haciendo era para mejorar y cómo estaban mejorando su comprensión. También pude ver que sabían perfectamente lo que estaban haciendo y que podían entenderlo. No vi a nadie frustrado, todos los niños estaban confiados cuando el profesor les hacía alguna pregunta, todos participaban y disfrutaban la clase. No vi a nadie comportarse mal o hablando por encima del profesor.
I have to write about who made me take the decision of the principal for the day but I just decided I need to test new things to decide or what I am going to study in the future and I make a better decision about my future.
Debo escribir lo que me hizo tomar la decisión de ser Director por un día y he comprobado que debo probar cosas nuevas para decidir lo que quiero ser en el futuro y así poder tomar buenas decisiones.
ISP Student Leadership Summit
Isabella R in Year 12, Jorge, M and Ricardo J in Year 11 successfully applied to be part of the first European ISP Student Leadership Summit in Madrid last week. They were incredible ambassadors for the school and I had the privilege of accompanying them. I have decided to let them write about their experiences.
Isabella R (de Year 12) Jorge M. y Ricardo J, (ambos de Year 11) solicitaron y consiguieron participar en el primera cumbre sobre liderazgo de Alumnos ISP en Madrid la semana pasada. Fueron unos increíbles embajadores de nuestro colegio y tuve el privilegio de acompañarles. Creo que lo mejor es que sean ellos mismos quienes expliquen su experiencia:
Isabella R - Year 12
For two days, we had an amazing opportunity to work with all the schools that are part of ISP Europe. In total it was 11 schools and 33 students, and as you may imagine there were a lot of different opinions and viewpoints. All of which was so interesting and we enjoyed understanding how different people think. But apart from that, it was an amazing experience and opportunity to make friendships and we were able to create a sense of community in a very short time period. Honestly, most of us did not expect much from the Leader Summit, as we had never been to something like this, but it greatly exceeded our expectations and we would absolutely love to do it again. It was just wonderful to step outside of a classroom and socialise with students from so many different places and discuss the sustainability and ecological situation of the world. Moreover, it was really encouraging and eye-opening to see everyone so eager and passionate to contribute to the discussion and take part in the leadership propositions that were made. Thanks to the hard work of individuals such as Nick Campbell (the Director for Learning in Europe) and Victor (a Year 13 student from Lady Elizabeth School, that if it had not been for his initiative this conference would have not even occurred) we all were able to connect and create bonds with so many people and were able to learn so much from them.
Durante dos días tuvimos la increíble oportunidad de trabajar con todos los colegios ISP de Europa. En total asistieron 11 colegios y 33 alumnos, y como pueden imaginar había diversas opiniones y puntos de vista. Fue todo ello muy interesante y nos gustó ver que la gente piensa diferente. Pero aparte de eso fue una experiencia magnífica para hacer amistades y creamos un ambiente de comunidad en muy poco tiempo. Sinceramente, la mayoría de nosotros no esperaba demasiado de una Cumbre de Liderazgo, ya que nunca habíamos asistido a algo así, pero superó con creces nuestras expectativas y nos encantaría participar de nuevo. Fue fantástico salir del aula y socializar con alumnos de distintos países, para hablar de sostenibilidad y la situación ecológica del planeta. Además fue muy alentador y nos abrió los ojos a todos el hecho de que todos fuéramos tan apasionados y estuviéramos tan dispuestos a contribuir al debate y participar en las proposiciones de liderazgo que surgieron. La conferencia no hubiera tenido lugar si no hubiera sido gracias al arduo trabajo de personas como Nick Campbell (Director de Aprendizaje en Europa) y Víctor (un alumno de Year 13 en el colegio Lady Elizabeth). Todos conectamos, creamos nuevas relaciones y aprendimos de mucha gente.
Jorge M - Year 11
The two days we were at Laude Fontenebro school, we learnt many key skills that every good leader should have. Some of the workshops were about speaking in public, improvement planning & prioritising, leadership styles and theory, people management, building and motivating teams, having difficult conversations and how to share your vision effectively. In all of the workshops, leaders used creative and entertaining ways of showing and explaining their ideas and experiences to all students. This knowledge helped us organise and present our presentation on day two of the conference and I am confident that it will also help us in the future to develop our skills.
Los dos días que pasamos en Laude Fontenebro nos sirvieron para aprender habilidades relevantes que todo buen líder debería tener. Algunos de los talleres fueron sobre hablar en público, mejora de la planificación y la priorización, teoría y estilos de liderazgo, gestión de quipos, construir y motivar equipos, mantener conversaciones difíciles y cómo compartir tu punto de vista con efectividad. En todos los talleres los líderes usaron formas creativas y entretenidas de mostrar y explicar sus ideas y experiencias con todos los alumnos. Estos conocimientos nos ayudaron a organizarnos y hacer nuestra presentación el segundo día de la conferencia y estoy seguro de que nos va a servir en el futuro.
Ricardo J - Year 11
Our student presentations were about how to make our school more sustainable and we had to identify the actions we would take, the challenges and potential solutions as well as suggest which leadership skills we will use. In my opinion, the presentations we delivered at this conference were very helpful. We were able to apply public speaking techniques that we learnt in one of the courses delivered by a teacher in Fontenebro school. We also learned how to work in groups that were delivered by the headteacher of Fontenebro school. By having this experience we have learned by having a good struggle and by receiving constructive criticism by Nick Campbell and Nick Rugg we will get better in any future presentations that we do.
Las presentaciones que hicimos los alumnos versaron sobre cómo hacer nuestro colegio más sostenible y tuvimos que identificar las acciones que emprenderíamos, los retos y las posibles soluciones, además de sugerir qué cualidades de liderazgo emplearíamos. En mi opinión, las presentaciones que hicimos en la conferencia fueron muy útiles. Pudimos aplicar las técnicas para hablar en público que aprendimos en uno de los cursos impartidos por un profesor del colegio Fontenebro. También aprendimos a trabajar en grupos, sesión impartida por la directora de Fontenebro. Con esta experiencia hemos aprendido lo que es el "buen esfuerzo" y hemos recibido críticas constructivas de Nick Campbell y Nick Rugg sobre cómo mejorar en las presentaciones que hagamos en el futuro.
Year 12 interviews for Head Students
Interviews have taken this week at last for our new Head students. As part of the interview process, all the candidates met our current Year 13 students to find out what their experience has been like over the past year. Our Year 13 students then gave objective feedback on how the Year 12 students had contributed to the meeting. Each candidate then had a formal interview with myself, Ms Kremer and Mr Williams, where they had to share their ideas about leadership, and how the school can improve. The Year 13 students will also be leading the Year 12 Certificate Evening on Friday 13th December at Casa Diocesana.
Las entrevistas para los puestos de "Head Students" han tenido lugar esta semana en último lugar. Como parte del proceso de entrevista, los candidatos se reunieron con nuestros alumnos de Year 13 para saber cómo había sido la experiencia el año pasado. Nuestros alumnos de Year 13 les dieron sus impresiones objetivas sobre cómo habían contribuido los alumnos de Year 12 a la reunión. Cada candidato entró luego a una entrevista formal conmigo, Ms Kremer y Mr Williams, en la que nos contaron sus ideas sobre liderazgo y cómo puede mejorar el colegio. EAL (English as an Additional Language)

EAL, ESL, EFL, ESOL…what does it all mean?
Each of these terms are acronyms for language education for those where English is not their primary native language. English as a second language (ESL), English as a foreign language (EFL), English as an additional language (EAL), or English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) are especially important in the British School of Málaga as over 90% of our children are not English native speakers. We are proud to now represent over 25 non English speaking nationalities. Methods of learning English are highly variable depending on the student's level of English proficiency and the manner and setting in which they are taught. We try to adapt our EAL learning for all our students.
EAL, ESL, EFL, ESOL... ¿qué son todas estas siglas?
Todos estos términos son siglas en el lenguaje educativo referidas a todos aquellos programas impartidos a alumnos cuyo idioma nativo no es el inglés. English as a Second Language (ESL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL), English as an Additional Language (EAL) o English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) son especialmente importantes en The British School of Málaga, ya que más del 90% de nuestros alumnos no son hablantes nativos de inglés. Y estamos orgullosos de representar como comunidad a más de 25 nacionalidades no angloparlantes. Los métodos para aprender inglés son muy variables, dependiendo del nivel de inglés del alumno y hace que se cambie la forma y encuadre de la enseñanza que reciben. Intentamos adaptar nuestra Enseñanza de Inglés como Lengua Adicional a nuestros alumnos.
Why learn English as an additional language?
The English language has great reach and influence, English is taught all over the world. In addition to native English language countries, there are now over 8000 university courses in English being taught in non-native English countries. This development offers our students a wealth of opportunity on where they wish to study once they have graduated. In countries where English is not usually a native language, there are two distinct models for teaching English: Educational programs for students who want to move to English-speaking countries, and other programs for students who do not intend to move but who want to understand English content for the purposes of entertainment, or conducting international business. For our children, English offers a host of opportunities to their personal and professional life. On average for a bilingual employee, using both languages, their salary will typically range between 5 and 20 percent per hour more than the base rate.
¿Por qué aprender Inglés como Lengua Adicional?
El idioma inglés tiene un enorme alcance e influencia, el Inglés se enseña en todo el mundo. Se estima que hoy día se imparten más de 8000 cursos universitarios en idioma vehicular inglés aún cuando los centros educativos se ubican en países de habla no inglesa. Este desarrollo ofrece a nuestros alumnos una gran pléyade de oportunidades sobre dónde continuar con su educación universitaria una vez que terminan en el colegio. En países en los que el inglés no suele ser un idioma nativo hay dos modelos de enseñanza del inglés: programas educativos para alumnos que quieren irse a países angloparlantes y programas de inglés para alumnos que no tienen la intención de mudarse pero quieren saber inglés por su propio interés o con motivos de trabajo. A nuestros alumnos el inglés les abre grandes oportunidades en su vida personal y profesional. De media, un empleado bilingüe, que sea capaz de usar dos idiomas funcionalmente, tienen un salario por horas entre un 5% y un 20% más alto que el básico.
The British School of Málaga EAL Department
In 2017 the school introduced a designated program for EAL. Initially the department was responsible for the developing intensive English instruction to new students in the emerging phase.

En 2017 el colegio introdujo un programa de EAL. En principio el departamento era responsable de desarrollar cursos intensivos de Inglés a los alumnos nuevos que se incorporaban al colegio y en fase incipiente.
Intensive English units for both Primary and Secondary
The duration of the programme is determined by an initial assessment, interview and ongoing monitoring by the EAL teacher, class/form tutor and parents. The programme typically lasts from 4 – 10 months and it is available at an additional charge to parents of new students. The classes take place with a specialised EAL teacher, Eve Kelly, in classes of no more than six students. It is also responsible for managing the transition from Intensive English classes to mainstream classes. Intensive English instruction prepares students for success at school and focuses on developing their confidence to succeed in their learning journey.
Inglés intensivo para Primaria y Secundaria
La duración del programa está determinada por una evaluación inicial, una entrevista y una supervisión continua del docente de EAL, el tutor y los padres. El programa suele prolongarse de 4 a 10 meses y está disponible para las nuevas familias con un coste adicional. Las clases tienen lugar con la profesora especializada en EAL, Eve Kelly, en grupos de no más de 6 alumnos. Esta sección también es responsable de gestionar la transición de las clases intensivas de inglés al aula general. Las clases intensivas de inglés prepara a los alumnos para su éxito en el colegio y se centra en desarrollar su confianza para que puedan salir airosos de su viaje educativo.
Intervention & Support
Now, the EAL department at the school also offers intervention and support for students who are finding language a barrier to their learning. Key stage 2 programmes are provided in a mixture of English and the student's native language (where possible). However the programmes are designed to prepare the children for main stream learning in their classrooms where English is the only language spoken. Educational materials are always in English, but the vocabulary, grammar, and context clues may be modified to be more easily understood by students with varying levels of comprehension.
Intervención y Apoyo
En la actualidad el Departamento de EAL del colegio también ofrece intervención y apoyo a aquellos alumnos que se topan con una barrera lingüística en su aprendizaje. Los programas de Key Stage 2 (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 y Year 6) proporcionan una mezcla de Inglés y el idioma nativo de los alumnos siempre que sea posible. No obstante, los programas están diseñados para preparar a los alumnos para el aprendizaje en el aula con el resto de sus compañeros, donde sólo se habla inglés. Los materiales educativos siempre están en inglés, pero el vocabulario, la gramática y el contexto se pueden variar para que sean más inteligibles a los alumnos, ya que tienen distintos niveles de comprensión.
MED+ Event 23rd November · MED+, evento el 23 Noviembre
One of our parents and Core Value Champions (Colaboration), founded and is the President of the association "Bisturí Solidario - César Ramírez". Thanks to the work of this association and the events organised throughout the year, Dr Ramírez helps make possible operations for people who need them desperately but who live in poorer countries. Very shortly, he will be travelling to Uganda to carry out several operations over a ten day period. On Saturday 23rd November, an event called MED+ is being held in the Sala María Cristina, where a group of influential doctors, who are active on social media will be giving a series of 15/20 minute TED talks. This is not a medical conference but an event open to the general public. It is a charity event and tickets can be purchased for 50€ for adults and 25€ for students. Dr Ramírez has kindly reserved some adult and student tickets for our school community to enjoy free of charge. We are sure that many of our students could benefit from attending this event especially if they are studying Science or if they have an interest in communication and journalism. We are lucky to be able to take advantage of this opportunity and would like to thank Dr Ramírez for this gesture.
Uno de de los padres de nuestro colegio, y también Patrón de uno de nuestros valores centrales, la Colaboración, fundó y preside la asociación que lleva su nombre "Bisturí Solidario - César Ramírez". Gracias a la actividad de esta asociación y los eventos que organiza a lo largo del año, el Doctor Ramírez ayuda a que se pueda operar a personas que lo necesitan en países pobres. De hecho, dentro de poco el viajará a Uganda para operar durante 10 días. Este Sábado 23 de Noviembre, en la Sala María Cristina, tendrá lugar un evento llamado MED+, en el que un panel de influyentes médicos, referentes y muy activos en la divulgación y redes sociales, realizarán una serie de charlas de 15-20 minutos, tipo ted-talk. No es en absoluto un congreso médico, sino un evento completamente abierto a toda la sociedad. El acto es benéfico y la entrada se puede adquirir por 50€ para adultos y 25€ para estudiantes. El Dr Ramírez ha tenido la gentileza de reservar algunas entradas para nuestro colegio, tanto adultos como jóvenes. A buen seguro que muchos de nuestros alumnos se podrán beneficiar, sobre todo si están cursando ramas sanitarias o que tienen interés en la comunicación y el periodismo. Tenemos la gran suerte de disfrutar de esta oportunidad en la comunidad y le agradecemos el gesto al Dr Ramírez.

Movember stands for: preventing suicide in men, improving quality of life for men with prostate cancer and testicular cancer, helping men take action (globally, men die on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons) and raising funds during movember.
Movember significa: prevenir suicidio entre los hombres, mejorar la calidad de vida entre los hombres con cáncer testicular y de próstata, ayudar a los hombres a emprender acciones (en general, los hombres mueren 6 años antes que las mujeres de media y por motivos que se pueden prevenir) y para recaudar fondos durante Noviembre.
The men’s health crisis calls for big minds, and big solutions. But there’s a smaller, hairier solution to the men’s health crisis. A solution men can grow themselves and it’s sitting under their noses. The Mo can inspire donations, conversations and real change.
Esta situación sanitaria que afecta a la población masculina requiere de grandes mentes y grandes ideas. Pero hay una pequeña ayuda, más peluda, para contribuir a afrontar esta situación. Y se encuentra debajo de las narices de los hombres. El reto Mo puede inspirar donaciones, conversaciones y un cambio real.

NURSERY
I can eat a rainbow
In Nursery, during this term, and as part of our ‘My Colourful World’ topic and supporting our ‘Healthy Eating’ policy, we invite you to take part in our ‘I Can Eat a Rainbow’ challenge. Each Friday, we are asking the children to bring in a piece of fruit, or a vegetable, of the same colour as our colour of the week. This week, this week our colour is YELLOW so the children could bring in some `pineapple, a banana or a yellow pepper. They will prepare the food together and share it during the Friday morning break.
En Nursery, durante el primer trimestre, se desarrolla el proyecto "Mi Mundo Colorido", que también sirve de apoyo a la política de "Comer Sano", y realizan la actividad "Puedo Comer un Arco Iris". Todos los viernes los niños traerán un pedazo de fruta o de verdura de un determinado color. Por ejemplo, la próxima semana nuestro color será el AMARILLO de modo que los niños pueden traer un plátano, una piña o un pimiento amarillo. Prepararán la comida juntos y la compartirán en el recreo de por la mañana.
Wendy Woods
Many of you will remember Wendy Woods who worked as a Primary assistant for many years until she returned to England two years ago. We have just received the very sad news that she lost her battle with cancer earlier this week. She battled really bravely against the disease and she kept her sense of humour and spirit until the end. She was a fantastic friend and colleague and we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to her family.
Algunos de ustedes recordarán a Wendy Woods, que trabajó en nuestro colegio como Asistente de Primaria durante mucho tiempo, hasta hace dos años, cuando volvió a Inglaterra. Acabamos de recibir las funestas noticias de que ha fallecido por cáncer a principios de esta semana. Luchó con toda valentía contra la enfermedad y mantuvo su sentido del humor y el ánimo hasta el final. Wendy fue una amiga y compañera fantástica y nos gustaría enviar nuestras sinceras condolencias a su familia.
