Elevator Safety Program

The OSU Elevator Safety Program is developed to minimize accidents and/or injuries associated with the use of elevators within Ohio State University facilities. Ohio State utilizes contract employees for the maintenance and service of all elevators on campus, who are required to follow all of the applications and practices contained in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) A17.3-2013 standard.

When approaching an elevator, know your destination; stand aside for passengers exiting the elevator; if the car is full wait for the next car; and do not try and stop a closing door.

When entering and leaving an elevator, use care and watch the floor to ensure it is level with the elevator car; hold children, pets and carry-on items carefully; and stand clear from the doors.

When riding on an elevator, stand next to the elevator wall; hold the handrail if available; and pay attention to the floor indicators.

In the event of a delay in an elevator, activate the ALARM button, the in-car phone, or a personal cell phone to call for assistance; do not attempt to force open elevator doors; and remain calm, you are safe and help is on the way.
